About the Author
Verena Rau has a B.A. in English from the University of California and an M.A. in Education of Learning Disabled Children from Minnesota State University. Working in grades 4-8 for more than 25 years, Verena taught language-arts and reading in regular and special education classes. She was the recipient of three Mentor-Teacher awards. In her spare time, Verena enjoys hiking, mountaineering, and bicycling with her husband Greg. Several stories in this program reflect her enthusiasm for the outdoors.

This is the best study guide and teaching guide I've found so far using Orton-Gillingham multi-sensory approach--for kids over 9 years old and adults. I"m still working through the first part. Love all the detail and organization.
This is a fantastic tool to use with older low level readers and poor spellers. It is straightforward in directions, sequential, and not babyish at all. You must start at the beginning for effectiveness.
Great - I'm using it in my tutoring business for my children with dyslexia and those who just have not mastered English language "construction."

This book is a must have for any parent or teacher who has a struggling reader. As the parent of two sons with learning disabilities, and a librarian, I can recommend this book without reservation. It provides a clear path to spelling and reading mastery. Rau breaks down the process into 12 lessons including; rules of syllabication and the consonant team. I recommend this book to all my customers who are trying to help their children become better readers. This book will help children who are struggling to enjoy reading instead of dreading it.
As a student of Greek and Latin, and as a Greek speaker I find the treatment of Anglo Saxon, Greek and Latin prefixes, suffixes and roots in Power Tools for Literacy most gratifying. Aside from their treatment in Power Tools for Literacy, the treatment of these subjects is essentially an untapped resource in our elementary and secondary curricula. This is the stuff that gives students at all levels language confidence. Well done, Ms. Rau!!
We love this book - it was given to us by a friend who happens to be a resource specialist to use with our 11 year old daughter. We have been very unhappy and frustrated by our daughter's school reluctance to teach phonics. With this book,, our daughter's reading skills have soared. She is becoming more confident, and I even seen her start to read books on her own!We are only through the first 5 lessons, although this is just a fraction of the book. The teacher's instructions are clear and concise, and our daughter finds the exercises and stories interesting. As she gains skills, her motivation increases to learn even more.Thanks for the great book, it's the resource that we've needed all along. If your child is having reading difficulties, this could be the answer. It's really worked for us!
