Was a great guest book, basic, and reasonably priced

Worked great for my wife's retirement reception (especially as it went well with our "tropical" theme). I guess it was a little smaller than I expected (though it was the same size as pretty much all of the rest of them I looked at), but there were plenty of entries, and ample room for folks to write. It's paperback, in case that matters (but again, so were practically all of the ones I looked at, especially the reasonably priced ones). Would definitely purchase again, but my wife and I are both retired now, so NOT HAPPENING! :-)

Spy the Lie: Former CIA Officers Teach You How to Detect Deception, by Philip Houston Michael Floyd

Review

“Wouldn't it be great if we could bottle the collective wisdom of CIA officers who have interrogated hundreds of people, and apply all that experience to situations where we need to know if someone is telling the truth? In Spy the Lie, three CIA veterans have done just that. If you read this book, which is packed with great anecdotes, you will feel closer to being able to flesh out a lie.” ―Forbes“Lie detection isn't ingrained; it's learned… By following their advice, which is based off years of interrogating terrorists and double agents, anyone can improve their odds at getting to the truth.” ―New York Post“Michael Floyd and two fellow former ex-agents, with more than 75 years of interrogation experience between them, honed their methods on terrorist and criminals. But their advice work equally well on cheating spouses, lollygagging employees, or schoolkids feigning illness.” ―StarTribune“This book is both entertaining and highly informative―and it’s the real deal. It gives readers genuine practical tools and tactics to use in all walks of life. I highly recommend it.” ―David J. Lieberman, Ph.D., New York Times bestselling author of Never Be Lied to Again“For many years, Phil and his team have employed their skills to vet terrorist sources, catch spies, and protect the nation's secrets. With this book, they have done something perhaps even more remarkable: Equip anyone to reliably detect deception. Consciously or not, we all judge others' sincerity and truthfulness to protect ourselves. Most of us do it badly. This book will teach you to do it well.” ―Robert Grenier, chairman of ERG Partners, former director of the CIA Counter-Terrorism Center“In this entertaining, instructive, and fascinating book, Phil, Michael, and Susan lay out an easy-to-follow process for detecting deception, with real-life stories that are the stuff of spy novels. I have used their model for years with phenomenal results.” ―Marisa R. Randazzo, Ph.D., managing partner at SIGMA Threat Management Associates, former chief research psychologist, U.S. Secret Service“A terrific resource for anyone who would love to be able to tell when someone is lying. Having undergone their training, I've applied their methodology in some critical situations, and I've been blown away by its effectiveness. Spy the Lie is a captivating read with practical takeaway you'll use every day.” ―John Miller, senior correspondent at CBS News, former associate deputy director of National Intelligence, and former assistant director for public affairs at the FBI“When my detectives on the LAPD's Counterterrorism Bureau and Robbery-Homicide Division took the course, we had veteran investigators tell us, ‘No one should ever be promoted to the rank of detective without taking this course,' and ‘I now want to go back and re-interview every suspect I ever questioned.' What this team has developed is truly unique, and anyone can learn to use it.” ―Bill Bratton, chairman of Kroll Associates, former LAPD chief, former NYPD and Boston Police Department police commissioner

The authors deliver an instructive, informative, and practical guide as to how you can detect lies. An interesting essay presents a follow-up detecting process on deception. Imagine conducting an interview, confronting your soul-mate on issues or speaking to your child about drugs, and being able to reveal the truth. This captivating book provides useful tools on how to tell if someone is lying or telling the truth. To have the ability to unmask a lie is not only amazing, but can be extremely effective in life-altering consequences. Entertaining and Highly Recommended!

"There is no such thing as a human lie detector" (p. 14).Three ex-CIA agents, the authors!, who are now working privately spill the beans on the system they apply to detect lies. This method, L-Square Mode System, focus on observing what 'the suspect' says, does and reacts, and by learning to make the right kind of questions to spot deceiving behaviour. It all comes down to body language, congruency in speech and behaviour within the subject's own idiosyncrasy. It also come down to being aware of our self-defeating beliefs and limitations to spot a lie: the belief that people will not lie to us, the reliance on behavioural myths, the complexity of communication, our own biases, the 'global' influence, and how smart we think we are.The system relies on getting clusters of deceiving information, not just individual clues. However, one of the most surprising statements is that if we can identify the first deceiving behaviour (verbal or non-verbal) in the first 5 seconds (seconds!) we can reasonable conclude that that behaviour is directly linked with the stimulus. (p. 31). Of course, the higher the number of deceiving behaviours exhibited by a person, the most likelihood of deception. One of the most important things to keep in mind when applying the L-square System is that its virtue relies on its simplicity, that deceiving clues do not always equal deceit or a lie, that the system is not infallible, that the more we practise it the better we get at it, and part of the success depends on obtaining information in a non-confrontational non-judgemental way. The authors have successfully applied this system for years, and once we go through the book and see some of their examples (especially the long transcript and examination in appendix 2), you will notice that you can, too, start spotting deceiving behaviour. The book has a glossary with a short explanations of all the specialised terms the authors use throughout this work. I always appreciate the effort when electronic books have the index properly hyperlinked, which is the case here. The main downside of the book is that is not particularly didactic if you want a step by step sort of book. Some of the things that prevent the book from being more user- friendly are:> Some of the summaries, oddly enough, are placed in the middle of a page, interrupting the narration and some of them not directly related. Why not placing them at the end of the chapter they relate to?> The amount of information and types of questions they offer can be complicated because their names and because involve different and dynamic approaches that vary depending on how the subject of interest reacts. However, there is not a cheat-sheet scheme or figure to help readers navigate the system easily.> There is no section with exercises for us to practise, with hidden solutions at the end of the book. That would have been so handy especially because the book is about spotting lies.> Some of the statements about body language are familiar to me, but it would have been really useful having some figures or photos with some of those mentioned in the book shown, but there is none.Overall this a fascinating book that it is usable for daily queries about your family, friends and co-workers, not just to learn how intelligence and law enforcement institutions operate. However, not as practical as I was hopping for.

This book's authors have many years of experience interviewing CIA assets, CIA employees, and a variety of ordinary people in non-CIA settings. Their specialty is in determining when someone is lying. And they are good at it. This skill in detecting deception has done a lot of good, helping their clients make better decisions about hiring the right new employee, trusting the right baby sitter, and prosecuting the person who really "did it." Sometimes the skills bring pain, making clear that the waiting doctor's politeness covers bad news or that a spouse isn't really joking about "her boyfriend." Still, it's better to know, isn't it?Detecting deception isn't magic and it isn't infallible. But it is possible to become better at it than most of us are now. The book identifies several barriers to accurately detecting deception. We expect most people to tell the truth, we ask the wrong questions, and we look for the wrong "tells" in other people's behavior. And we try to watch everything they do instead of focusing on a small number of reliable indicators.Such reliable indicators of deception include certain kinds of verbal hesitations and evasions as well as specific body movements of which a deceiver is largely unaware. Readers learn to ask questions that require different mental processing from guilty versus innocent suspects. One technique is to ask questions a good guy will answer with an immediate--and perhaps angry--"No!" while the bad guy will need to give a longer, more carefully worded response. We watch for deception indicators that begin in the first five seconds after a question. And we look for clusters of indicators rather than for single actions. There is more to it, of course, but this is the core methodology the book presents. It's good stuff. And it's learnable.I attended a training session conducted by the authors' company (QVerity, in partnership with hemsleyfraser) this week. I had listened to roughly three-quarters of the audiobook during a long car ride the day before. Based on what I learned from the book I was able to do well in the video pre-test, successfully distinguishing a lying suspect from the four who told the truth. Almost everyone was also able to do this after two hours of training. So it seems to me that the book is nearly as valuable as being taught these skills by the authors themselves. It is a well-written, fascinating book on a very useful topic. I highly recommend it.A final comment. The book closes with a warning to use these skills only for good. And to not practice them on our significant others. Apparently catching your spouse in all of those little white lies can put unnecessary stress on the relationship. I may have made a variation of this error by giving my wife a copy of the book and inviting her along to the training. Not sure that was such a good idea. We'll see.

#510,587 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This is a great introduction to so called street photography. I only wish that it was much longer and had more photographs by Lewis. He also steers clear of giving his opinion in various areas on the assumption that there are always other points of view. Commendable, but I would have appreciated knowing what he thinks in more detail, even at the risk of some controversy.

I'm usually careful about being negative when it comes to books; even if it's not a great volume it probably took the author a lot of work to create. But all the same, there are good options and there are not-so-good options for spending your hard-earned dough. This particular book doesn't quite make the cut.If you're buying this book for technical, or skill-based, learning, you're better off going somewhere else. The content is largely generic and the sort of thing that can be found anywhere on the web. I didn't get a good sense of the author's personal style or ethos. A better bet for technique would be The Street Photographer's Manual, also to be found here on Amazon.Of course, another main reason you would buy such a book is to look at great examples of street photography, and enjoy the author's personal style. Sadly, most of what is contained in this book is very commonplace, with little to recommend it. I'm looking for poignancy, juxtaposition, humor, energy... all of those things which make a street photograph transcend time and location to speak to the larger human experience, but I'm having a hard time finding it in the work the author has chosen to show. It's almost as if the decisive moment was not waited for. I would like to be kinder, but I'm left with a feeling that this book was rushed to press by a publisher who wants to get in on the rising tide of modern street photography and not as a showcase of unique and powerful craft. Also, the book itself is of very low quality. The cover and pages both feel too thin and just cheap.Edit: 6-20-15. After letting this book settle in further, I actually took an additional star off of my review. Often street images bear multiple visits to really soak in their flavor and contents, but I can honestly count on one hand the images in this book that even interest me. On the other hand, dozens of them exhibit what I would call the wrong moment, or lack of patience or vision... "Uninspiring" is the word that really describes the author's work here depicted, just as "uninspired" is the right word to describe his advice. There is just no insight to be had here. I wanted to like this book, but it has left me quite cold.

I expected fantastic photos, but I thought that was all I would get. Instead I got advice that I will be able to return to as I take my second turn through the joys of photography. The narrative comes to me at a glorious time. I enjoyed photography intensely when I was younger, but had been very frustrated by the photos I've taken in the last decade (all low tech digital phone cameras). This book helped me realize that I can enjoy photography again -- I just need to reengage with proper tools. The narrative speaks to his skill as an educator, as it invites the beginner in, without ignoring or disrespecting readers with greater expertise. Can't say enough great things about the book. I have already bought a 2nd as a gift for a friend.

It's just OK...

The book was well writhen.

Gordon Lewis' Street Photography is both a creative inspiration and also a pleasure to read. If I had to summarize it in one word, it would be "witty." By that I mean that Lewis is elegant, illuminating, and often funny, both in his writing and in his photography. Being able to hear his voice come through in his writing and in his photography (and the photography of others that he includes) really helps the reader understand Lewis's creative point of view. He shows us instead of telling us, and it is contagious. This is a book for someone who already knows how to use their camera technically, and who wants to improve their aesthetic/artistic ability in the domain of street photography. Obviously, the ability to "read" street photography competently helps one's creative ability to produce quality street photography. Because Lewis's voice comes through in both prose and images, one learns how to see the world as Lewis does.Let me give a simple example. Early in the book, he shows a photo of rich reds, complex architectural structures, and warm sideways light streaming in to bring it all alive. Only after admiring the photo did I read the caption, where I discovered, to my shock, that the photo was taken in the entryway of a Target department store (!!). When I looked back again at the photo, I realized that it could well have been my own local Target, and I wondered: how many times have I blithely walked past this incredible play of light, color, and structure, not bothering to look, because it was a Target? Throughout, Lewis shows how apparently boring everyday scenes can be turned into very interesting photos--if you just know how to look.I have many photography and art books with titles that have variants on "how to see," "how to read," "seeing like a photographer" and so on. Rarely do I come away from them--whatever else their merits are--feeling like I am more capable of seeing like a photographer or of reading photography; like anything else, such knowledge is slowly and painstakingly acquired. Yet this beautiful little book Street Photography delivers as much of that as one could reasonably hope in a surprisingly compact space.Again, I think what made the book work so well is the unusual connection between words and images. Commonly in photography books, the images are stunning and the words are either so few that they don't do much, or so turgid that you know why the author became a photographer and not a writer! This connection between words and images immerses the reader in Lewis' creative point of view. I'm glad for the few hours I spent in it, and I look forward to revisiting this book next time my creativity seems dried up, to remind myself that I have merely forgotten how to see.

Another good reprinted leather bound book by Time Life Books. See my reviews. I like true stories about the Old West.I knew some of the famous Theodore Roosevelt's life but this book taught me much about his frontiersman/outdoor life and his being a hunting sportsman. The 187 page book read very well with no boring parts. I read it in 1 1/2 days. Some great B/W drawings and illustrations. A few were a little darker than I would of liked but still good. T Roosevelt was a very good writer and the reader has no problem following the descriptive flow of his writing.I target shoot but don't hunt. I don't put down hunters especially if they use their kills for food. Roosevelt was a very good descriptive writer about the outdoors he loved and hunting. He owned a ranch on both sides of the little Missouri River. A really nice place. We see the hardships he experienced in hot and cold weather. He only had very limited experiences with hostile Indians but had a few experiences with bad white men. A group stole his boat ( the only one on the little Missouri). The group of three is tracked down and captured. Also scenes of men shooting in saloons, etc. Theodore was deep in the tail end of the Wild West. What I really liked was his descriptions of the wild life he hunted, how he stalked them and the difficulties getting a shot. Some of the animals like the White Goat were quite rare. I was extremely interested in his hunting of antelope. We have a small ranch in Oklahoma and the Proghorn Antelope sometimes come right under the barbed wire fence to drink from a very small overflow pond from a holding tank from our windmill. I was sitting on a bench with my Remington 700 .308 with scope on a rest and pointed it at a beautiful Buck Pronghorn Antelope( the same kind of animal T Roosevelt describes in his book). I pulled the trigger on the unloaded rifle and said "Bang, if I wanted you I could have you. Too beautiful an animal INMO for me to kill. If I was desperate for food I would though.Back then in the mid to late 1800s in the mid west interior there were no supermarkets to get your hamburger. You got out and shot your game. This is a classic book by a really famous man and a great writer. The vast majority of the time Teddy killed for food while enjoying the sport of hunting. There were a few times in the book he shot a particular trophy just for the trophy. I wasn't too interested or thrilled about that.Anyone interested in the great outdoors of the Old West, great descriptive detail about many different kinds of wildlife, survival, Indians, outlaws/badmen,combating severe weather, ranching and sportsman/hunting will like this book. 4 stars

Much better than his earlier "Hunting Trips " book.He tells stories of his ranching adventures in a very nice style. In the era before TV and film westerns, books like this gave non-westerners a glimpse of the fast-disappearing American frontier. I can see why Easterners of the 1880-90s loved this book as it vividly describes what life in the Dakotas was like. Today, we can appreciate it as a well written original source material on that period. If you've read any of the several Roosevelt biographies I'd still recommend reading this book. While several of the more notable adventures (such as following the fugitives who stole his ranch river boat) are addressed in other books, it's nice to get a more detailed account of his time in the west.

Theodore Roosevelt provides fascinating, detailed descriptions of his life on a ranch in the Badlands. To create the kindle book it appears the publishers scanned the book and used Optical Character Recognition. Unfortunately the scanned version can be difficult to read: formatted awkwardly with strings of meaningless characters scattered through the book.

This is not your average romanticized ranching & hunting book. It is a straightforward, very frank, well written story of ranch life and hunting in the western U.S. before there was much of anything (and hardly any people) in the northwestern plains basins. The ink etchings by Frederick Remington alone are worth 4 times the price of the book to me. He was our most famous Western American artist and did almost all this artwork for this book in situ on Roosevelt's ranch or in Roosevelt's camps. There is one of his sketches just about every other page, throughout the book.If you never buy any other book on the early West, buy this one.

From someone who has lived this life on the great plains from cowboy to hunter, this book is in every detail right on. It is written in Teddy's classic modest style (who else could float the Missouri during spring break up chasing criminals with guns and describe it with as much excitement as buttering toast). It also is a repeat of some of his earlier works as this seems to be a bit of transitional book of when he was about leaving the Elkhorn for the east. The Wilderness Hunter is more poetic and Hunting Trips of a Ranchman is a better read, but the history in this book of how Montana and the Dakotas were made safe by lynch justice makes this one interesting too.The sketches by Remington are wonderfully historic to study and add a great deal to this book. This book though is like all of Teddy's in settling down with a friend and always looking for his next book to find a campfire with him again.Thank God Mr. Roosevelt wrote so many wonderful books.
