In The Reformed Doctrine of Predestination, Loraine Boettner gives a clear, thorough, accessible description of the subject doctrine (including, importantly, what it is _not_), including Biblical grounds for the doctrine, and Biblical responses to many common objections to it. Boettner further discusses some of the implications and practical ramifications of the doctrine, and the place it has played in history. I can't really address whether the treatment is persuasive, as I was in general agreement with the doctrine before I read this book. His interpretation of the doctrine includes some positions that, while certainly consistent with other treatments of Calvinist doctrine that I've read, haven't been expressed as part of that doctrine (specifically, that the number of the elect is far greater than the number of the non-elect, and that infants who die will all be saved).I note that, although the copyright date is 1932, the book has clearly seen some revision since that date, as it contains references to events from the 1950s and 1960s. The date of revision is not indicated on the copyright page.My only complaint with the book is the poor print quality. Five stars for the content, minus one for the print quality.

Excellent book. Very informative on Calvin's theology. Calvin gets a bad rap regarding Servetus. He wasn't a citizen of Geneva till 1559, way after Servetus was burnt. Calvin had no political power and couldn't change the mode of execution.

This is a great overview of Calvinism. He thoroughly covers the 5 points, answers common objections, and uses scriptures galore to support these doctrines. He also gives a history on John Calvin, and the effect Calvinism has had on places where it was believed.Overall great book. It will probably serve as a reference for me later on.

This is an excellent book and Loraine Boettner has done the Reformed Faith proud as he always does. I do not believe in election the way Calvinists do, but that did not stop me from reading and liking his book. I think all Presbyterians and Lutherans and some Calvinistic Baptists would be reinforced in their faith by reading this book. It didn't change my view in the slightest, of course.

Some people avoid labels for their beliefs and this includes Christians. They will particularly avoid labels for various understandings of Christian theology. But without labels, every time you want to explain your theological framework you need to launch into a lengthy discussion. But if you use terms (e.g. orthodox, liberal, reformed and evangelical) much can be conveyed immediately. The Reformed label for a particular understanding of Christian theology has seen a resurgence in recent decades. But exactly what is Reformed theology? Basically it is the understanding that God is sovereign in the salvation of man (i.e. every Christian was predestined to be a Christian long before they lived). And it is called Reformed because it was a key teaching of the Reformation. Of course the Reformers taught much more than predestination, but believing in God's complete sovereignty in salvation is essential if one wishes to call themselves Reformed. So what is entailed in the Reformed doctrine of predestination? Boettner's book is an old but helpful defense of the Reformed doctrine of Predestination. Initially in the book Boettner asserts key doctrines concerning God's planning, sovereignty, providence and foreknowledge. Then he moves on to teach the five points of Calvinism:(i) Total inability/depravity;(ii) Unconditional election;(iii) Limited atonement;(iv) Efficacious/Irresistible grace;(v) Perseverance of the saints. Then Boettner answers common objections against Reformed doctrine:(i) it is fatalism;(ii) it is illogical;(iii) it makes God the author of sin;(iv) it discourages motivation to exertion;(v) it represents God as unjustly partial;(vi) it is unfavourable to good morality;(vii) it precedes a sincere offer of the gospel;(viii) it contradicts the universalistic Scripture passages.Next Boettner teaches about other relevant issues including the harmony of Reformed doctrine with science and Islam. The book then closes with a quick review of Calvinism in church history. My only problem with the book is that it briefly promotes post-millennial eschatology and seems to be ignorant of Reformed Baptists.Nevertheless, if you are trying to understand what exactly is Reformed theology, Boettner's book is an excellent and convincing treatment of the subject.

NAMED A MOST ANTICIPATED BOOK OF 2019 by Buzzfeed, Entertainment Weekly, New York Magazine, Electric Literature, The Millions, PopSugar, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Publishers Weekly, Lit Hub, Bustle, and The Huffington PostAN INDIE NEXT PICK FOR APRIL“Mind-bending. . . . A Gen-X bildungsroman that speaks to young generations, a Russian nesting doll of unreliable narrators, and a slippery #MeToo puzzle-box about the fallibility of memory. . . . [Trust Exercise is] a perfectly stitched together Frankenstein’s monster of narrative introspection and ambiguity. . . . It flexes its own meta-existence―as a novel about the manipulation inherent in any kind of narrative―brilliantly.” ―New York Magazine“[Trust Exercise] burns more brightly than anything [Choi’s] yet written. This psychologically acute novel enlists your heart as well as your mind. Zing will go certain taut strings in your chest. . . . Choi builds her novel carefully, but it is packed with wild moments of grace and fear and abandon. . . . [A] delicious and, in its way, rather delicate . . . phosphorescent examination of sexual consent.” ―The New York Times“An intelligent and layered portrait of a school’s legacy. . . . [Trust Exercise] makes something dramatic and memorable from the simple elements of a teen movie.” ―The New Yorker“Perhaps the best [novel] this year. . . . [Trust Exercise] begins as an enthralling tale of teenage romance and then turns into a meticulously plotted interrogation of the state of the novel itself. . . . Read it once for pleasure, and then again to turn up all the brilliant Easter eggs.” ―Vulture“Compulsively readable and formally brilliant: this is basically a literary unicorn.”―Lit Hub“[As readers] we find ourselves doubting everything we previously took as fact. It’s dark, evocative, and fun.” ―Buzzfeed"Fans of experimental plot structure will find much to love in [this] spellbinding new novel."―Elle“A feat. . . . [Trust Exercise] is bold. . . . There is innuendo and insinuation and a hint of sinister. . . . In the end, there’s no shortage of insight in this novel. Or pathos.” ―Bookforum“[A] remarkable novel with a narrative twist that will knock you out.”―Bustle"Explosive. . . . [Trust Exercise] will linger long after the book ends."―Observer"This twisty novel . . . seems a straightforward enough story―until the roller-coaster second half makes you doubt everything that came before." ―Marie Claire"Superb, powerful . . . Choi’s themes―among them the long reverberations of adolescent experience, the complexities of consent and coercion, and the inherent unreliability of narratives―are timeless and resonant. Fiercely intelligent, impeccably written, and observed with searing insight, this novel is destined to be a classic."―Publishers Weekly (starred review) "What begins as the story of obsessive first love between drama students at a competitive performing arts high school in the early 1980s twists into something much darker in Choi's singular new novel . . . an effective interrogation of memory, the impossible gulf between accuracy and the stories we tell. . . . The writing (exquisite) and the observations (cuttingly accurate) make Choi's latest both wrenching and one-of-a-kind. Never sentimental; always thrillingly alive." ―Kirkus Reviews (starred review)“[Choi’s] finest novel. . . . Trust Exercise should immediately put readers on alert . . . exposing tenuous connections between fiction, truth, lies, and, of course, people. Literary deception rarely reads this well.” ―Booklist (starred review)"What a wickedly clever, formally inventive book Trust Exercise is. I was blown away by Susan Choi's literary vision, not to mention her sensitivity and wit."―Jami Attenberg, New York Times bestselling author of All Grown Up and The Middlesteins“As soon as I finished . . . [I was] desperate to talk about the novel with anyone else who’d read it. A startling, perplexing, fascinating book by a writer I’ve long been―and will always be―eager to read.”―R.O. Kwon, author of The Incendiaries"Packed with the kind of shrewd psychological insights that make you sit up straighter, Trust Exercise is a frequently brilliant novel that draws you in slowly and carefully and then becomes increasingly hard to put down. I don't want to give too much away, so all I'll say is that the book is full of twists that are thrilling without being manipulative or melodramatic. I am sure I am far from the only one who had to put aside everything else while I raced to the end." ―Adelle Waldman, nationally bestselling author of The Love Affairs of Nathaniel P."Trust Exercise is a brilliant and challenging novel, an uncanny evocation of the not-so-distant past that turns into a meditation on the slipperiness of memory and the ethics of storytelling. Susan Choi is a masterful novelist, who understands exactly where we are right now and how we got here."―Tom Perrotta, New York Times bestselling author of Mrs. Fletcher, The Leftovers, Little Children, and Election"An ingenious, morally complex exploration of how our youthful entanglements, cruelties, and traumas shape the rest of our lives. Choi’s writing is dazzling in its control and precision; this witty, sharp, unsettling novel grabs you and won’t let you go."―Dana Spiotta, National Book Award-nominated author of Eat the Document and Innocents and Others"I can't remember the last time I had such a visceral reaction to a book, or was so dazzled by a writer's inventiveness with structure. Susan Choi is a master and Trust Exercise should be on every human's reading list. A perfect knockout, with profound things to say about art-making, adolescence, and consent."―Julie Buntin, author of Marlena"This novel is a work of genius and should be a future classic. It has the most audacious narrative shift I've read since John Fowles's The Collector. Plus, it includes the phrase 'a virtuoso feeling-state lasagna.'"―Gabe Habash, author of Stephen Florida

This was a hard book to review, and in some ways, is a perfect example of why I wish there was the ability to give a book 3.5 stars instead of having to choose between three and four stars. The summary of the book provided in the description gives the reader the basics - it starts out at a performing arts school for high schoolers, with a focus on Sarah and David and their romance in front of their classmates and teacher. It then goes into the future with unique twists in the narrative format to make the reader question what they have read or to see it from a different view. I'm hesitant to say any more than that, as it would risk spoiling the book. "Trust exercise" refers to exercises in the performing arts school, but it also refers to the reader needing to trust the author. On the plus side, I'm impressed that the author provided something new with this book. It's difficult to find experimental formats that work, and it's even harder to write them. I was surprised by the changes in format and didn't really see them coming. Choi's writing is crisp - she doesn't waste words - and she sets scenes up well. I had a clear picture in my mind of the school and the theater. She hits the right notes with the time setting (the early 80s) and her descriptions of the clothes the teenagers wear fit in with that time period. I'll also note that while Choi does not specifically name the large southern city in which the book was set, I'm pretty sure I know what city it is supposed to be or resemble, and the descriptions are stunningly on point. On the negative side, I feel that to really enjoy a book like this, you have to be invested in the characters. Most of the characters are fairly unlikeable, and while it's definitely not a requirement to like a character in order to enjoy a book, a reader still needs to be invested or engaged with them in some format. I just couldn't get there with these characters. I did not like or have a lot of sympathy for Sarah, even for some of her hardships which were likely designed to elicit sympathy from the reader, and the rest of the characters weren't much better. I felt like I had to push myself through the first 200 pages of the book and it wasn't until after that point that I felt more invested - and given that the book only has a little over 250 pages, it would have been beneficial to be engaged before that point. Furthermore, even at the end, I wasn't entirely satisfied. I thought that the story would redeem itself then - and to some point it does - but I definitely still had questions after finishing reading. This might be partially the fault of the book's summary, as it states that the final piece of the puzzle falls into place and truths will be revealed, but it's also entirely possible I'm missing something.Overall, this one will definitely get mixed reviews. I suspect some people will give up about 50 pages into it, some people will be in the middle like me, and some people will absolutely love it. I know that after it's released, I'll be looking for discussions and forums on the internet to see what others thought and if there were meanings that I missed. One final piece of advice - don't pick this one up for a time when you need a book to get through quickly. Although I read it in about two days, I wondered if reading it at a slower speed would have been more beneficial.

My understanding is that the structure of this book is what's brilliant about it. It's been quite buzzed about, and I was expecting something perhaps like Notes on a Scandal. However, I was so turned off by the self-conscious writing style and distant narration I quit reading on page 8. Here's the line that made me drop the book - for context, two teenagers are making out:"He realized with a shock that it needn't be thus."Done, but I rated this two stars because I can see how others might not mind being so distant from the characters or have writing this stilted.

This is one of those books that I know I'm supposed to love... But, while I can truly appreciate it, it's a book that just isn't for me. Right now. However, I need to be clear that it's beautifully and artfully written and Susan Choi is a true talent. This is why I hate star ratings... What's good for me won't necessarily be good for you and vice versa. I think that is very clear if you read through reviews of this book. The title of Trust Exercise is absolutely perfect. Not only does part of the book take place at a high school for the arts in which students take classes in trust exercises, but as readers, we're forced to continually wonder who to trust as we're reading. Choi turns the book on its head several times. The book should be read slowly and carefully and if you don't have a lot of patience, you may find this book difficult. There aren't any chapters and there are barely paragraphs; just large chunks of text. Wordy text. In a world filled with light and fluffy novels that can be read while you're on a the treadmill or taking a 5 minute break, this will be a tough book for some. It's a true literary novel.I think if i had been more invested in the book and the characters from the start, I would have been able to read on in a deeper way. But because I wasn't sucked in and didn't care for any of the characters (to be clear, I don't need to "like" characters to enjoy a book; I just need to care what happens to them in some way), I found myself skimming some parts, which left me very confused. And the more this happened, the less I cared and the more I realized this book just isn't for me at this time in my life.Perhaps I'll re-visit it later and I encourage you to pick it up for yourself to see how you feel. My word of advice is to take your time with Trust Exercise; read it while you're distraction-free and allow yourself to become totally immersed in it. And if you find that the book isn't for you, that's OK; it doesn't mean it's not a beautifully written novel by an incredibly talented author.

I've read other Susan Choi novels and have really enjoyed them for their edginess. I liked this story, but it seemed to drag a bit. Choi is a great storyteller and I'm sure many readers will enjoy this one, but I prefer her previous books, which are stellar.

Review

"One of the best books of the year! Poetic, heartbreaking, surprising. Matilda is a young girl in Bougainville, a tropical island where the horror of civil war lurks. Mr. Watts, the only white person, is the self appointed teacher of the tiny school where the only textbook is the Dickens novel Great Expectations. Storytelling, imagination, courage, beauty, memories and sudden violence are the main elements of this extraordinary book."—Isabel Allende"Genuinely affecting.... A book with worthwhile thoughts to impart."—The New York Times“Mister Pip is sheer magic, a story about stories and their power to transcend the limits of imagination and reside in the deep heart's core. Lloyd Jones is a brave and fierce writer, and he has given us Dickens brand new again.”—Keith Donohue, author of The Stolen Child"Jones's prose is fautless.... With a mixture of thrill and unease, Matilda discovers independent thought, and Jones captures the intricate, emotionally loaded evolution of the mother-daughter relationship."—Publishers Weekly“The novel is a paean to the transformative power of literature, particularly its ability to occlude an unpleasant reality with a fictional alternative and to expand an individual's sense of possibility.”—New York Sun“Not just a delightful read, Mister Pip shows the cut and thrust of true multiculturalism.”—Atlantic Monthly

I loved this book. We did it as a Book Club selection and everyone (there were 16 present at my book club) enjoyed it. Some husbands read it on advice from their spouse and the spouses enjoyed it too. I read it twice and enjoyed it even more the second time. The story is based on true occurrences that happened on an island named Bougainville which can be found on a map of the world. I'm glad the story was told for the world to read about. Not having read Great Expectations is not a problem for the reader as the Charles Dickens story is explained to the reader. However, having some knowledge of the book or the movies that have been made from this book would be helpful so that the reader can appreciate the parallel characters drawn between Mister Pip and Great Expectations.

A New Zealand writer has produced a highly entertaining and well written novel in Mr. Pip. The title comes from the main character in Charles Dickens's wonderful novel, Great Expectations. The narrator is a young black adolescent, named Matilda, and she is bright and open to all the ideas of the world that her eager mind can absorb. She is just entering puberty, living on an island in Papua New Guinea. She lives with her mother and is an only child. Her father left the home to work in Australia but has never returned. Her mother, a rigid woman, has developed a hard shell to protect herself from hurt. Unfortunately this sets the stage for distance between the mother and daughter. Matilda's teacher is a mysterious white man, married to a black woman. Much of the novel involves the gradual discovery over time of the true identity of this man, Mr. Watts. His wife, Grace, appears to be suffering from depression. With few school books or other academic resources, Mr. Watts teaches the island children, from Great Expectations. The main character of the novel, Pip, captures Matilda's imagination and soon she reflects about her own experiences and compares them to the experiences of Pip. As the influence of Great Expectations increases for Matilda, her mother becomes concerned and a rivalry develops between Mr. Watts and Matilda's mother Dolores. This novel is about the power of the narrative to not only entertain but to allow reflection on personal experience. Life is so full of many experiences, many of which we barely have time to remember, or analyze. The power of novels is their ability to help people, at a conscious or unconscious level, organize their experiences and put meaning or new meaning on life experiences. There is a wonderful passage in this novel where Great Expectations disappears and the students, with the help of Mr. Watts, reconstructions the story. The story is more than just a parable on the power of the narrative form, though this is certainly a characteristic of this novel. The scenes where the children reconstruct the novel from memory or the scenes where Mr. Watts agrees to tell the military insurgents the story of Mr. Pip every night for 6 nights are brilliant. The early chapters where island life and myth infiltrate the story line and dialogue are magical. The final chapters where Matilda is an adult and reflects upon her childhood are beautifully written. This novel is highly recommended.

Mr Pip ,by LLoyd Jones, is an onion of a novel. By that I mean it is layered in an intricately woven manner to encompass a myriad of themes. At first it is a deceptively simple tale set on the lush tropical island of Bouganville where the native population, isolated and blockaded, are facing a civil war of deprivation and horror.Into the mix comes the only white inhabitant who remained after others fled,Mr Watts. He steps up to take over the abandoned schoolhouse and thus becomes the Pied Piper of Bouganville. Through his storytelling of Dicken's Great Expectations he provides a safe haven for the war stricken children . They immediately succomb to the power of the written word and are transported to Victorian England where they meet Pip who in some ways is like each one of them. Imagination takes them away from the immediate horror of civil war. Mr Pip becomes a savior of sorts especially to Matilda, the young Narrator. But Mr Watt's hold on the children causes issues with the parents who see his approach as a threat to religious beliefs and cultural allegiance. These differences of culture and dogmatic approach lead to a stand off between Mr Watts and Dolores, Matilda's mother. This clash will create unlikely heroes as the war encroaches and moral decisions must be made. There is great symbolism here for a world where races and cultures face major changes in an ever more global world. When the only copy of Great Expectations disappears and the soldiers demand to see a fictional Mr Pip,(who they believe to be a real spy) there are terrible reprecussions. Storytelling becomes the weapon of choice at first, as it soothes the savage rambos who are really just misguided school children at heart. The seven nights of Mr Watts' storytelling are a heroic vehicle to stall until an escape plan is put into effect. But storytelling has created a great dilemma too, as there is no real Mr. Pip to offer up to the demanding redskins who appear savagely and without warning. I will not divulge any more of the plot but suffice it to say that Great Expectations causes major life changing effects as Matilda moves into a future off the island. The novel is a homage to literature, to teachers who change destinies, to clashes of cultures and racial divides, to the horrors of war ,to the power of the written word , to the empowering value of imagination and to the religious and moral values that sometimes must collide and clash before there can be compromises. This small novel offers huge issues to ponder . Mr Jones has exceeded many expectations with this novel.
