About the Author
Yi Ren taught and conducted research in Beijing for several years after graduating from Tsinghua University. Since moving to the U.S., she has been teaching Chinese for the past twenty years. This is her fourth book about Chinese language and culture.

As an educator, who has been teaching foreigners to learn Mandarin Chinese language for 18 years, I would say it is very difficult to learn a foreign language since we (learners) are not in an immersion learning environment. During the instruction, I have been guiding students to use English-Chinese and Chinese-English dictionaries online and on a hard copy format. Recently, I found this newly published Mandarin Chinese Picture Dictionary from Amazon is very useful. I encourage all of my students (at the beginning and intermediate levels) to use this picture dictionary in/outside of class. This Mandarin Chinese dictionary includes many colorful illustrations, 1,500 practical phrases, and sentences, which allow all students to reinforce what we have learned in the class and allow them to practice the usage of useful words/phrases and sentence patterns in a real-life situation. This dictionary also lists all Pinyin syllable (Chinese phonetic alphabets) and English definition to guide students to learn new words /phrases and sentences by themselves. In addition, this picture dictionary has online audio, which helps all students to improve their listening and speaking. This dictionary is particularly designed for students who would like to improve their proficiency levels and prepared them for the HSK and AP Chinese exams.
This is better suited for older or adult Chinese as second language learners rather than for younger children in bilingual households. Written in Simplified Chinese with pinyin and English translations, and the photos chosen to illustrate each word or phrase is nicely presented. I would recommend this as a learning supplement in addition to lesson books, flashcards, and other materials.
As a visual learner this is a great resource! It's a modern and up-to-date take on Mandarin vocabulary enabling conversations from big tech to environmentalism to cooking. The pronunciation guide is also clear and nicely visualized. Looking forward to the next 1500!

I have been trying to lear Mandarin for some time and have finally found a book that really helps me.I like the way it is organized around common themes and places we use in our daily life. This organization gives the feeling that I am actually learning something about modern Chinese culture as well as learning Mandarin. The colorful illustrations make it fun to learn. I also found the on-line video particularly helpful with pronunciation. I am in that age group that wishes to keep ones memory sharp and think that this book helps with that ...even more than crossword puzzles or soduku.Mika Farer
