fabulous informative and wonderfully written stories/accounts of interaction with these other beings. I TOTALLY believe in this, and this book did a great job of dispelling that corny rubbish idea of fairies being sweet and delicate and spreading glitter everywhere they go. These creatures can be brutal! very good stories~ Ireland is a must see on my bucket list. This stuff is scary!

Eddie Lenihan is a killa thrilla dilla storyteller. This is (probably) his most accessible book, but it's so clear and it's so awesome that it made me want to go out and get the rest of his stuff. And I mean storytelling skills that can stand the test of centuries, probably. Stories told in tall buildings with electric lights or stories told out in the woods across firelight, Mr. Lenihan has the skills to draw you in and listen.

This collection of collected narratives and commentary was enjoyable and informative. Some of the stories were collected fairly recently; they are a testament to the still-living "fairy faith" of Irish people. The commentary was very informative. I think of the faith as a sort of underground religion coexisting with mainstream churches of the British Isles that despite so much change has managed to survive, so this book appealed to me.

A classic for those wishing to know more about the Sidhe from the perspective of the average person in Ireland who lived at the time when the faeries were still known to walk the paths people walk. And of course there's Eddie Lenihan. What a treasure!

I came across this book after watching an episode of Destination Truth. The author was featured on one of their episodes. Eddie Lenihan is a great author and you can tell he really cares about the subject. I found this book fascinating, mainly because of the stories but also because he explains the dangerous side of the good people as well. I agree with the other reviews that some of these stories are not good bedtime reading! But they are all interesting and worth reading none the less.

Lenihan's prefatory remarks deserve a quote:Yet I am not so sentimental as to imagine that people can be other than creatures of their time and place. And our time and place is a world, a society that emphasizes the technological rather than the personal (despite what advertisers might have us believe), the superficial and fleeting rather than the profound, the commercial at the expense of the communal. All these changes have their price, and the casualties we can see all around us. (12)Here, Lenihan speaks for all of us who witness the recent decades that have transformed the physical and spiritual Irish landscapes irrevocably. Lenihan's compilation of oral testimony, mainly gathered from the region, witnesses a less manicured environment. There, ringforts survive as fairy redoubts, lights dance and dust puffs as evidence of fairy activity, and those of us who dare to cross to their side live shortly or longer afterwards, seemingly at the whim of beings diminished in size but not in power. Speaking Irish, hurling, dancing, they represent the survival of a "hidden Ireland" refusing to capitulate to the modern age, just as Daniel Corkery wrote, perhaps romantically I admit, of the 18c bards clinging to the their remnants of an indigenous Munster mentality. Lenihan's collected accounts of rural informants tell us of an era that may, I hazard, hearken back to a "race memory" of the Iron Age, as the indigenous people retreated before the triumph of the unbending ax and the steely blade, so that their descendants the Tuatha de Danaan cringe before the mower's scythe or the spalpeen's knife, while we flee from their nocturnal hegemony across flowing water to at least temporary refuge. Many who read these stories in urban Ireland or abroad, as Lenihan observes, hide their unease by scoffing at--or denying these tales as those of--a skittish and inebriated peasantry. The storyteller takes pains to gradually let these reactions surrender to, at least in an older generation, the revelation of their own rumours, those of a friend of a friend, that often parallel the encounters he has gathered over the past quarter-of-a-century, He tells us that his audience has to be able to remember a time before 1970 or so to recall any such tales. This reminded me of the sign I saw at the National Irish Folk Museum outside Castlebar. It requested visitors to fill out forms if they wanted to share their own rural memories, specifying, however, that these needed to be prior to 1960. Between Lenihan and the National Museum system, we notice the great division between those (like myself) who remain cut off from the other side of the water, living always in a land where television silenced the seanachai, and the tales of the dark faded when, as you can see on your evening stroll, the blue light emitted from the box in every room near at least one window of nearly every electrified domestic interior. In the depopulated hinterlands, the old folks tell their stories of the other side (the "wee folk" or its like never finding an expression in these respectful pages.) Lenihan analyses each account in an afterward combining deftly a folklorist's skill and a reciter's interpretation. He avoids skepticism and enthusiasm admirably, balancing his sympathy with the vanished culture these tales capture with a frank admission that this culture will never revive.(Excerpted and edited from a review article in the on-line Belfast-based journal The Blanket.)

I found out about this book through the radio program "To the Best of Our Knowledge". It is a delightful collection of stories, written in the various tellers' own voices. It is as easy to read, as it is to listen to a story. At the end of each story the author writes a brief reflection, either linking the story with folkloric commonalities or pointing out areas for more "rational" explanations, but he never ruins the "magic". It is a good read from both a sociological/folkloric studies perspective and from a more magically indulgent perspective.

It is always wonderful to hear from a great traditional story-teller. This collction is fascinating because it is a collection of fairly contemporary stories about encounters with the Fair Ones. If the Fair Folk are of interest to you, this is a treasurer trove. I recommend it for all Pagans as well as folklorists, scholars, people who are interested in Ireland, etc.

Early this spring (2008) I discovered a hummingbird nesting in the dwarf magnolia tree in our front yard. The nest was remarkably engineered and so well camouflaged that it was all but invisible to people walking by. I watched with fascination as the tenacious momma bird clung to her duties through the noise and commotion of an emergency sewer line repair taking place just five feet from her nest. The digging nearly cost us the tree due to the ground caving in around the trench. Thankfully, after the tractor operator learned of the hummer's plight, he was ever so careful to save the tree and her nest. The repair is done and now there are at least two tiny beaks poking up from the nest.A good friend sent me this book after hearing my hummingbird story. It was a delight to read such a well written examination of hummingbird behavior and the special interactions of one hummer with one human being. The photographs are stunning and informative. After reading this book, I felt like I had developed a special bond with the momma hummer in our front yard. I felt like I knew her on some special level that would have been otherwise impossible. I highly recommend this book for bird lovers and nature lovers of all sorts.

I bought this as a gift for my 90 year old mother on Mother's Day this year. It was a lovely little book filled with informative facts about hummingbirds based on the author's true life experiences with these small birds. She also covered the emotional aspects of having a hummingbird living in her sunroom and what she had to do to keep him alive & well. The photographs in the book were taken by the author too, so she covered all the bases!I think the only negative thing I could say is that when the book arrived, it was much smaller than I had envisioned. The size made it hard to see the detail of all the photographs...and Mom is 90 years old...

What a joy this little book is ! ! ! The photography is exceptional and so beautiful, of little "Squeak", the hummingbird in the author's home over the winter. This would make a wonderful gift to most anyone that enjoys the little birds around their home. I will share my book with friends and family and continue to enjoy it even more, myself. It is a quality book on heavier glossy paper stock. I also like how the author gave the correct names of the flowers Squeak enjoyed and went to, throughout the winter in her lovely home. This book is worth every cent ! ! !

which the talented and admirable writer, Arnette Heidcamp, leads the reader through - namely, the first months of a Hummingbird's life, from the beginning of winter to the advent of spring.Ms. Heidcamp has amazing expertise in both bird and plant life, and what one appreciates also is her great love of them both. One wants to thank her for this lovely book and for the precious photographs which accompany it.Throughout the book, the reader gets to know Squeak more and more, to understand the habits and traits of this darling hummingbird, and to realize what an intelligence it has. Ms. Heidcamp is dedicated and devoted and, yes, the ending is sad. I have to admit I shed a tear or two as a reader saying goodby. I can only imagine what an emotional time Ms. Heidcamp had to go through, after fostering this hummingbird so carefully and intimately, when the time came to set Squeak free.I have alredy got several of Ms. Heidcamp's other books lined up to read, and even signed up with Random House to get an e-mail notice when she has a new book published.I can't praise this wonderful literary and photographic pursuit highly enough. Reading this book was a true joy!

I found this book very enjoyable because of my interest in birds. However, I did find it too factual. While most of the book revolves around Squeak and his adorable personality, there is a great deal of the author guessing about hummingbird facts based off of her observations of Squeak. I learned a lot about hummingbirds and found the whole story amazing. I would recommend this book to bird lovers. Also, the book itself is very well made. The hardcover, the photos, and the layout all combine to make a very lovely little book.

We are now living in an area where there are many hummingbirds, and have wanted to know more about them. The story of Squeak, aside from being fun to read, accomplished that for us. The author's attention to every detail of Squeak's feeding, bathing and sleeping habits is entertaining as well as informative. The author has a passion for flowers, especially orchids. She talks at length about which flowers the hummingbirds prefer. I would have enjoyed knowing a bit more of her personal interaction with Squeak and a bit less about the flowers. Even so, I am filled with admiration for her amazing attention to every detail of Squeak's life, and for giving us such an enjoyable story.

If you are bird lover such as my wife and I, we have 8 know, you can understand how special this would be. to befriend a little skittish hummingbird and have him stay in your sunroom all winter long. Having the privilege to see his movements and daily patterns up close, and finally become close to him and form a bond of trust. Such cute little descriptions of how he learned what he liked and how he trained her to help him get what he wanted. But this time I did not go to the back of the book and read so i could pepare myself for the enevitable. But his was not about him dying in the end. and i wont spoil it for the rest of you that love to read these books. A very good read with some beautiful pictures. well worth the learning experience. Brought tears to my eyes. But good ones.

There are a few reasons why I rated this book a 3. So let me list some pros/cons.PROS=====The book is worth a read because it contains some valuable information. Especially the chapters on the SOLID principles, the component packaging principles (analogous to the SOLID principles, but for components), and the chapter on component and class metrics that was very interesting. Those chapters are well written and I think demonstrate the principles well. Granted, you can probably find this information elsewhere. Probably why I rated the book a 3 instead of a 4.In addition, the refactoring chapter was pretty good, too. And there were several chapters that covered the basic, most common design patterns that most programmers should know if they already don't.CONS=====The book was written in 2007, and so is dated. For example, there is no use of generics anywhere in the sample code. IIRC, generics came out just after this book was published. Therefore, some of the examples given don't translate quite as well to the features now available in C#. Secondly, you can tell the examples are translated from Java. The original Clean Code book written by Robert C Martin is in Java--as that is a language the he programs in often. His son, who helped write this book, does program in C# (and probably Java)--but you can tell the examples still have Java programming idioms in them. (Full disclosure, I'm not a huge Java fan--that's my personal preference.) More importantly, however, is that Java has it's own coding conventions adopted by those who program in it, e.g. getSomething, setSomething (since Java doesn't have syntactic sugar for getters/setters), no 'I' in interfaces, it's just a List, not an IList--unlike C#. But the authors routinely ignore C# coding conventions in their examples, such as using camel case for methods and preferring getXXXX/setXXXX over .NET properties, and not prefixing interfaces with 'I'. For the record, I agree with the authors that prefixing interfaces with 'I' should not be necessary, nonetheless, it's a .NET coding convention. What I'd really like to see is the author update this book, including all the examples. Show us how you would write SOLID code using .NET generics; the role that lambdas play when writing SOLID code; and use .NET coding conventions throughout.Other than that, as I said at the beginning, the book still has a lot of good information in it that makes it worthwhile to pick up and read.

This is a terrific book. I'm a big proponent of the Robert Martin library of books, as I think he really knows his stuff. This is listed as just him and his son, but I do believe there are "guest contributors" as well. One of the things I like about this is that it not only discusses Agile in C#, but it also has real, honest to goodness code examples. It also has more real-world examples of SOLID and non-SOLID code, with explanations of how to fix the non-SOLID code.If I were to note one critical thing, I would like to see how SOLID ties in with Design Patterns. All in all, if you're a programmer at any level, I would seriously recommend adding this to your library. Not necessarily for the version of C# (since that changes), but for the concepts therein.

After finishing this book and thinking about how useful its contents would be for me in the workplace right now in the (almost) final quarter of 2014, I have concluded that this book is a valuable addition to my programmer bookshelf, albeit a mixed bag of good and stale bits. The good aspects of this book will remain useful. However, the stale parts are... well... a little too stale and beg for a new edition, which it seems Uncle Bob doesn't plan to undertake. The good points:The book has aspects that will keep this book on the shelf, ready to crack open at a moment's notice: justification for denouncement of excessive documentation and diagramming, encouragement of realistic / sustainable work hours, explanations of design patterns in a (loosely) C# context, explanations of agile PPPs from an angle I had not previously considered, demonstrations on how to produce reliable software development estimates, emphasis on test-first design / development as the foundation on which this book is written, the list could go on (but not much further). The stale points:To be fair, any language specific examples will become stale pretty quickly, as technology is always advancing at breakneck speeds. The Author(s) do state early on that they're not telling you "how to do C#!"; rather, they're extending a lofty olive branch to the .NET developer community (thanks....?) and wanting to discuss more language agnostic topics (refer to the good points listed above). A lot of reviewers point out that C# is really just a namesake in this book. Therefore, let's just go ahead and say it: the C# is really stale; there are such amazing things C# can do now that have made the language much more expressive, maintainable, dynamic, and capable. Funnily enough, some of these advancements were called for in Jack Reeves' article included in Appendix B of this book when he was referring to C++'s success at its onset. In a nutshell:This book is worth having around. I will refer back to this book often for inspiration on various design patterns. However, I would like a more modern C# publication on implementing these patterns in a way that actually leverages the language and avoids (now) known anti-patterns. It would be grand if someone took the content of this book to the next level with more modern insight. After having finished Agile C#, I experienced enlightenment in some ways, but at the same time, I need a C# palate cleanser.

While the material applies to any modern object oriented programming language , .NET as a framework and C# in particular, the concepts are very solid and can be applied to any programming language.I feel the take away from the chapters I read is , "Code today as if you're delivering tomorrow , design as if you're have a 5 year project" and you will get it done right.
