Technically very well done. Have only found a few errors in word/chords but that could be because of the versions I personally follow which are the more modern group such as Country Gentlemen, Seldom Scene, Del McCory, etc. My biggest disappointment is that it's more "old time country" than what I consider bluegrass. These are the songs (another complaint later) that the Stanley, Monroes, Jim and Jesse etc were doing after Bill Monroe established the bluegrass sound by adapting Old Time Country to their style of music. They are not the songs that they wrote for the bluegrass style. My other big COMPLAINT is that it could be titled Parking Lot Pickers Guide to Gospel. It's hard to turn a page and not find a gospel song. Would I recommend the book? Yes, if this is what you want to play. Yes, because this is what you find being played in most of the parking lot groups. If you want to play the bluegrass sounds of today, find a different group to jam with in the parking lot.
This has been the best bluegrass / old time book that I've found specifically for mandolin thus far.The song selection is wonderful. The title is spot-on because you will definitely hear many of these songs called at a jam. There were a few songs that I would like to have included, but none that felt like filler. The arrangements are simple enough for a beginner and include basic melodies in both tab and notation. There is also a chord chart in the back. Experienced players will find that the arrangements are complete but not cluttered, allowing room to fill out the sound how they see fit.There truly is something here for everyone: a huge basic songbook for beginners and an authentic reference for veterans. It may seem a bit expensive, but you really do get what you pay for in this volume. Dix Bruce hints at a possible volume 2 and I sure hope he follows through.
Having a track to play along with and TABS (not sheet music) is very inspirational. Easy learning curve with this set. So much fun I ordered the Mandolin version just for the tabs.For my two cents worth, better than any Hal Leonard book. Way to go Mel bay
Get ready for a roller coaster of learning as this book is jam packed with a whole lot of songs. Many of the songs I have wanted to learn but could not figure out the chords or solo tabs by ear.The audio files only go through one stanza and the chorus, however, after practicing the one stanza and chorus then it is just a matter of recording the lyrics in the cranial library as it will be the same chord changes and solo licks.Parking Lot Picker's Songbook - Mandolin
A good book to get started with Blue Grass Jam soles. However, too many Gospel songs and there are many errors. There are some songs missing on the audio website as well.
Our band has the Dobro , guitar and banjo book. After we started using them, we found out that a lot of the songs are not on the same pages. But they are only a few pages away from each other. Also, so far, we have found that some of the songs are not in the same key. Some of the banjo songs were written in G and the guitar and Dobro songs would be in A. No big deal though. I would just capo the banjo and play along with them.
This is a great selection of tunes, complete with chords and lyrics, wonderful for many different musical occasions. And Mel Bay publishes this with the kind of binding that lies flat on a music stand or leaning up against an instrument case. It's too bad they don't publish all their music books this way (see my review of Mel Bay Presents - Ryan's Mammoth Collection).This book is an excellent addition to the library of anybody who is just getting into bluegrass music as well as veterans who are looking for new tunes to add to their repertoire.
If you're wanting lots of songs for your jammin', this is a great book. Tabs, standard notation, chords and lyrics all in package along with decent recordings you can practice with are provided. I just put the CDs on the iPod and then start at the beginning and play along all the way through over several practices. There are a LOT of songs! My only quibble - and this is for accuracy only - is that there are some awkward rhythmic notations with meter changes that aren't quite technically accurate, but they'll work. So don't let that put you off for one second.I actually found this book with 2 CDs in the local library and after checking it out twice and paying overdue fines because I was loath to return it, I decided I really wanted this book for myself. I also use it to practice my bass.I recommend this set for anyone wanting more songs in their repertoire.
