Thomas Pavitte, born in New Zealand, is a graphic designer and experimental artist who often uses simple techniques to create highly complex pieces, and whose dot-to-dot pieces have been enjoyed by people all over the world. This is a very good book, so it's a shame they did such a poor job with the electronic formatting. It is full of typographical errors. Some are just amusing, such as the page on which the number "1" is substituted for the personal pronoun "I." Others are annoying - the sloppiness or poor kerning that turns too many "RN" letter combinations into the letter, "M." And I have yet to figure out what "malting" is supposed to be. It is an adjective that occurs several times, but I think it is supposed to be something else.So maybe you should get a hard copy of this book. It is a very worthwhile read. Dorothy Day was an American icon, a home-grown saint,who was so impressed by how well people pulled together in community after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake that it formed a basis for how she thought life should be lived. She's an inspiration and this book should be better known.

I love Dorothy Day! I have read her diary & thought this would be about the same, but it's much more! The book could be reviewed in many ways. One could consider history of the times with dates, novels read, private thoughts, life in general or in particular, relationship to the Church, development of self, religious & spiritual development, her writing, radical, feminine, or maternal movements, love: both physical & other, her conversion to Catholicism, her leanings toward justice, unions or her development to her place in caring for others through the housing, meal, farming set-ups she became famous for. The book is dense but very interesting; I marvel at her memory! I was wondering about the title & finally came to it. Amazing insights she had, including that one. She was so aware of her thoughts, life, spirituality with its duality, love, work & especially always being pulled in two different directions. This is a beautiful, deep, readable book. Dorothy Day is highly intelligent, educated, talented, adjusted in any circumstance. Her emotions were strong: a reader can feel her pain & agony, love, joy! The history of the times is valuable for anyone to get a feel for her experiences & learn. Her spiritual journey is inspiring. Her maternal instincts were deep. I could go on about this strong, amazing, humble, holy woman. But it would take far too many pages & I would not do her or the book justice. So, my advice is: Read this great book! You will not be disappointed no matter which facet you're interested in.

This is her autobiography -- she is an amazing soul,beautiful in outlook, couragous in deed -- alwayspushing the "limits" to work for the betterment of the humansituation. What a neat lady! The other amazing thing I found is that her life takes usthrough a time in the history of the US when Worker movements werejust being started. We see some days of WWI, the Depression, WWII,and beyond. She combined her passion to help the 99% and thecompletely down & out, with compassion and lodging and food --real works of mercy. The many different personalities she met duringher life come to life in only a few words -- she's a gifted writer, whichmakes the book read quickly. This is her story, the beginnings of theCatholic Worker movement, and a time in history that has a lot in commonwith our own.

This autobiography is simply told. Dorothy's radical love of the poor and her complete acceptance of Christ's message is inspiring. Saints are not perfect but strive to be. She helped so many of the poor with shelter and a chance to put their life on track. The title sums up her journey through life. She suffered losses and the" long loneliness". She had great faith which enabled her to love her neighbor by living among the poorest and providing all she had for their benefit...

I find it hard to read biographies. This book was not easy for me to read but it was worth reading though. There are passages that are incredibly moving. In particular, I was moved by how Dorothy Day would describe Peter Maurin.I deeply respect and admire Dorothy Day. It is beautiful how God worked in her life.

Dorthy Day was an important person in the social justice movement in the 20th century. Unfortunately her name is not well known today. This autobiography is a great introduction to her personal life and work.

As an English major in undergrad, a current MSW candidate, and a Protestant Christian, I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Day's selflessness, compassion, and intelligence are inspirational. This book was one of three options for a social work course assignment, and I am so glad I chose it. That being said, I think I would have better understood more of the earlier portions of book if I had a better grasp on the politics of the time period and of the Communist figures with whom she was involved.

Made me think hard about how to live my life. The book showed me that Christian life is defined by our relation to the brothers and sisters we are given by God. I also loved the wonderful prose of a great journalist. She is an inspiring saint!

I must begin by saying that the review claiming this is a book of difficult to read images only is incorrect. All letters come with a "transcript," with the letter images included to add interest. Please see the photo I've attached of a favorite of mine from the book, as an example of how the book proceeds. If you have any interest, I'd say, please get thisboom. It is a larger format, somewhat like a coffee table book; but the collected letters inside are funny, moving, intimate, inspiring, fascinating. Unlike so many "pretty" books that are done in about 20 minutes, this one has already provided so much enjoyment - reading, rereading, and sharing with my best friend and my family. The person who compiled the letters also provides background that further brings these letters to life. Can hardly wait to receive book 2!

It’s a stupendous compendium of letters from the famous and the ordinary from the ancient to the modern with beautiful photo copies of the letters reproduced in the book. The letters span the whole range of human emotions from kindness, passion, love, joy to heartbreak, anger, disappointment, and longing as the contents of the letters reveal the writer’s’ innermost thoughts, feelings, and emotions through the vehicles of pen and paper.Reading each of the letters made me feel deeply touched by the universality of humanity and reflective of the human nature manifested in writing without prejudice on the grounds of appearances and social standings, which influence our perceptions of individuals. Readers can find lots of very interesting letters in this book. Of all the letters in the book, the following three letters resonate in my mind: (1) E. B. White’s letter to his gentleman acquaintance regarding the importance of having hope for humanity; (2) Anaïs Nin’s rebuking letter to a faceless collector of her co-authored “Erotica” for his demand of more prevalent racy contents; and (3) a nameless German’s woman’s letter to her husband asking him to take her back home from a dreadful mental hospital she was in. It was so heartbreaking to read her brief letter to her husband that I could feel her pain, fear, and sadness alone in the grim place… I commiserated with her….Mr. Usher in his foreword states that if the readers are inspired to put pen to paper by reading the letters in the book, his intention of compiling the book will be fulfilled and greatly appreciated. That’s a very noble intention and sublime aspiration in this digital age. This book is a lovely work of art which the readers will never tire of.

Oh, no! Oh, no! I just finished reading Letters of Note, and now I don't know what to do with my life. I have been so immersed the last few days in this extraordinary book that I actually feel quite lost now. The letters Shaun Usher has compiled range from funny to heartbreaking, from silly to wise, from confounding to enlightening. There could have been a thousand letters here and I still would not have tired of reading. I cannot wait for his next compilation to come out. In the meantime, I will peruse his website, Letters of Note, to see if I can find more wonderful letters from personalities famous and obscure. Thank you, Mr. Usher, for giving us such an amazing experience!

Shaun Usher did not select a single letter for this compilation that was not worth my time to read. Even when the letter seemed as if it would be too long (as with Lucy Thurston to her daughter), the time spent reading it was worth every second and more. (Stoics Marcus Aurelius and Seneca had nothing on her). Here are the joys, sufferings, accomplishments, setbacks — and every other human condition and emotion — captured in a single collection. Each one is like receiving a letter of one's own, with that same precious quality. Some are funny, others tragic, but not a page was wasted. Usher also wrote brief but pithy, well-written introductions to the writers and circumstances of each letter.

I bought this book on a whim after reading an excerpt from it (the letter from E.B. White) on a blog I follow. I was instantly glad that I had and am already planning to purchase another copy as a gift. The title really describes it perfectly, as the selection of letters is perfectly chosen in a wide range, from chilling (Jack the Ripper) to witty (Dorothy Parker) to touching (Roald Dahl). As all the best books do, it offers a window into the "why" of humanity. In reading these letters, some written centuries ago, others quite recently, we see ourselves reflected, and we catch glimpses of other worlds in a new way. Reading it is like being invited into somebody's home...not through the front door to a dinner party in a dining room where everything is spic and span, but through the back into the kitchen, with muddy boots by the door and a stool by the counter and a plate of pie crust trimmings.As I got on this page to leave my review I saw that there was a single one-star review. Curious to see who could actually hate this book (maybe, I thought, they just hate books...in which case, why buy one) I read it...only to discover that their book had arrived printed upside down. As an author myself, I have to say, leaving this kind of review does writers a terrible disservice, as many people scan "average star ratings" when deciding to purchase a book. When you review a book, you are reviewing that BOOK, not the printer, the distributer, OR the post office (as one such review I read complained that their copy had been dented in the mail).Once again...fabulous book. Stop thinking about buying it and just do it. Now.

I was shocked at the amount of errors in this book! Clearly no editor on this one. Pictures do not match the experts instructions. Such an amazing woman - not sure why this is so poorly done.

I read another review that the book was overpriced, but thought I'll buy it anyway. I hate to admit it because I'm sure a lot of work went into this book, but it is overpriced. The images are clear, but I was flabbergasted that the photos didn't match the descriptions. For example, page 6 (why are some pages numbered and some aren't?) the images don't match. #1 was the only one that fit with image #1. Image #2 is description #3, image #3 is description #4, and image #4 is description #2. Then for some reason the images are repeated again on the next page. It happens AGAIN on page #26 where the images don't match up with the numbered descriptions. I don't understand this oversight, but it's extremely confusing. I'm spending my time trying to match the images with the descriptions in order to understand it. For $20, and her kids taking the photography, I would think she could've afforded an editor to proofread the book.The substance is good, but the amount of errors throughout the book make the $20 price tag not worth it at all. I'd pay 11.99 for it.

I happen to be a certified pilates instructor, so already know some of these exercises. I was stunned by the lack of proofreading done on this prior to publication. There are errors both in text, and in the layout of photographs. Since I know what I'm doing, I could follow along. I would imagine a novice would be confused.

I can't see how anyone can give this book 5 stars - unless you're a friend of the author. Otherwise, please. As in instructive book, more care (was there any care?) should have been taken to ensure that the pictures matched the descriptions next to them. They don't in most cases. You are left to guess what applies to what and what the author meant. The info is repetitive while also lacking insight and specificity. Since the author appears experienced and qualified, frankly, I was appalled at the number of typos, poor grammar, and mis-labeling that went cover-to-cover. Save you're $20 plus shipping and do a Google search for the same information. Wow, was I disappointed when it arrived.

Normally i keep bad reviews to myself but after spending twenty dollars on this book I felt it my duty to express my discontent. Big pictures but very little content. Nothing new at all in this book. Not worth the twenty dollars. Grabbing a towel with your toes, picking up a pen with your toes and then marbles. Roll your foot on a raquet ball in a few different directions, and then pull a rubber band apart with your big toes and you have just about the whole program. Given the scanty amount of content, I would have at least expected the descriptions of the exercises to be well written and thorough but they were not. It only took about 20 minutes to review all 38 pages. Don't waste your money. You should be able to find the exercises easily with a google search.

Good information in the book, however, don't think it was worth $20 for such a skimpy book? Wished I had reviewed book online first before purchase, EVERYTHING in it I already was taught by my Pilates Instructor, I expected something different or a little more information. Had I paid $10 or less, even if hadn't seen exercises prior, book would have been worth it...although the information is invaluable if you're not aware of the techniques.

This is not a book. This is more like a pamphlet.Go with the Melt Method they have a great Hand and Foot treatments that also revitalize your whole body. It’s a real book or you can purchase videos and get more bang for your buck. Got to say I’m very disappointed.

Bought for a friend. Felt like his youth, working coal mine.

Beautiful book with great pictures of the southern WV coal fields. This book is a must for anyone from this area.

Dr. Ansted came to West Virginia and declared the "rock that burns" was bituminous coal much wanted in London parlors, befriended silent partner 'Colonel' Paige, and began his mission. Civil war interrupted plans but eventually NewPort News accumulated the primitive resource that the children of West VA tell me if they had been properly compenstated for they would not be poverty stricken presently, and on to London. James E. Casto has shown us the early pictures and now we see a new chapter in West VA history unfolding as a Russian with British ties takes over the Green Bank Telescope! Casto, we need an investigative report, please.
