I don't know what i was expecting when I ordered this cookbook. However, when reviewing it on my Kindle, I found myself having to flip through 4 or 5 pages between recipes to get through the stories. Although, some of them are interesting and I did read a couple of them, I would have rathered all recipes. A little story behind each one is cute but to go into such history doens't impress me.I have only cooked one of her recipes. Honestly, I don't even know if it is in the cookbook. I got it off the internet when googling her recipes to decide whether to buy her book. But, the pancakes of hers are awesome!!!! Best I have ever tasted. I now always keep sour cream in my fridge in case I want some pancakes.
Edna Lewis, "The Taste of Country Cooking", is probably the best cookbook I own, and I have a cookbook library. Ms. Lewis cookbook reads like a novel. She captures the feelings of long ago times, and with chores on the farm that was fun because of all the family lived under one roof. Uncles, aunt, cousins,...just anyone with family ties lived together and shared all the work. She said it didn't seem like work because there was enough people to help out, that there was a lot of time to go fishing and singing and playing the upright piano. Her Grandfather, was a freed slave that built the huge house they all lived in. It is a wonderful book to read and the recipes are precise and delightful to make.I Love This Lady and Her Book, and I wish that I could have met her before she passed. I will honor her by making the recipes she put down and remember her as I eat my way through her lovely cookbook.Thank You,Sandy Hatton
I have been looking for a cookbook containing "old timely" recipes.I FOUND IT. While I never even heard of some of the ingredientsor recipes, I found so many my mother used to cook when we werepoor (and didn't know it). I have enjoyed trying some of them.
Top Chef featured Edna Lewis and this cookbook on one of their episodes. I was mesmerized by her, her story and how they described this book - I instantly when online and ordered it. It's cookbook, a glimpse into her life, a history book and more. I love it and even think I might try some recipes from it too:)
The book was received in perfect condition. I live the stories along with some incredible recipes. Together it makes the book more charming! The biscuits I made were incredible and even my neighbors raved about them.
This is the original modern cookbook that tells a story and creates an environment while giving you some really good Southern Appalachian recipes. There have been many copycats since, but I really like the way she writes about food. A great sociological read, even if you never tried a one of the recipe, but I guarantee you the recipes are good, too!
Absolutely stunning. Being a Virginia native, I can relate to the stories and eating as the seasons change. Although Ms. Lewis didn't use Apple Butter or use Peppers in ANY of the recipes, there are far more examples of excellent food than that. The stories are phenomenal. Even without the recipes, this makes for an amazing novel in itself to read about the good ole times of old Virginia.
Edna Lewis is a true Southern Belle! Our Cookbook Group chose her as one of our monthly authors to celebrate. We all made a dish from one of Edna's books, and it was a true Southern feast complete with warm Southern hospitality! My Mom was raised in KY, and the dishes and conversation brought me back to "the good old days"! Edna writes about herself in her book, and coupling that with her fabulous recipes - this is one of my "keepers"!!!
This is one of the most personal cookbooks I have ever read. Edna Lewis opens a window into her life and love of cooking that will inspire anyone who is fortunate enough to own this book. The recipes are accessible and interesting. I can’t wait to start cooking like Edna Lewis!
