Publishing a book is more about marketing than the literary art of writing: Kelly demystifies the commonly-held view that all you have to do is sit down and channel your amazing story on paper, send it to a few publishers and upon beholding it, they'll see the genius of it and make you a best-selling author. Not true for nonfiction writers of the type that would love to be published by Hay House. And not true for all writers, argues Kelly, because the world of publishing has changed dramatically since the days when JK Rowling sent her manuscript to dozens of publishing houses in the 1990's. The industry has consolidated, and most importantly Amazon has dominated the market and Kelly lays out exactly how that affects you as an aspiring author and what editors are looking for from you as a writer.2. Kelly is a true coach: She doesn't just give the guiding principles, she delivers the goods. Being a writer myself, I hesitate to write a less-than-stellar review on someone else's work. Writing is difficult enough without someone criticizing your efforts. I knew from the start that this book was NOT geared toward me. The author claims to write TRANSFORMATIVE NONFICTION, whatever that is supposed to be! I had hoped to find something that might guide me in developing my own how-to book on writing Fiction for my sister. This book didn't even come close.The most informative parts of the book describe the publishing process itself and how it has changed over the years. Beyond that, I really didn't find this book to be more than one big Pom-Pom-waving Pep Rally. If that's what you want, then go for it. Otherwise, you're likely to regret wasting your money.
This book is amazing! I started writing a book 2 years ago but didn't get very far since I had no clue what I was doing. Then this book was recommended to me and now I'm not just going to actually finish and self-publish the book, I'm going to try and get it published by a traditional publishing house. It gives you all the know-how and tools you need to make the right decisions before you even start with the writing process, then walks you through actually getting it written, and finishes with how to get it published.
