If you have access to the internet, which if you're reading this you do, you can get better, more detailed, and more up-to-date information online. Unless you're brand new to black powder shooting, and plan to live off-grid like a mountain man, this book is absolutely not for you.It's very light on useful information, or detail, for someone who actually owns a black powder firearm and would like to learn how to work on them. I bought this hoping it would help me learn how to tune my cap and ball revolvers, but what I found was a brief 3 page explanation of the procedures involved which I already knew, and were absolutely useless to me.It seems this chapter was written for a person who doesn't own a firearm, but for some reason wants a brief survey of some of the procedures involved with building on, or doing some hobby gunsmith work. However, you will not gain that knowledge from this book.There are much better resources available than this book. I suggest you look elsewhere.

i was raised around firearms and always loved them, but a stint in military service "over-saturated" me. forty-something years later, i experienced new interest. i always loved civil-war-era pistols, and bought one after happening across a few for great prices in a well-known sport outfitter's catalog. i wanted a book that would show me something of the ins and outs of these guns, and this was available. this book covers a lot of ground that i really didn't need, but chapters on "tuning" a cap-and-ball pistol and on bluing were extremely helpful. once again, amazon offered something that i needed!

Too bad its out of print. Has a lot of good information for those of us who like to maintain our B/P guns.

This book arrived in excellent condition and is informative on some subjects. I was hoping for something a little more exhaustive, but it was inexpensive.

Unfortunately this book is now out of print and its content out of date. I can not find one of the kit models which it covers still in production.But no matter. The information stands on its own. You can benefit allot from the pictures and overall skills that can be mastered by applying what can be gleaned to similar projects.Thanks Sam!

I own several black powder revolvers and in the interest of staying in one piece I research the art thoroughly. There's a trick to growing old. It's a matter of surviving your own stupidity and that of those around you. Anyone who get's into black powder and doesn't tread cautiously will get a rude awakening. Get the book.

I cried so many times reading this book that I forced myself to stop and not pick it up again the next day multiple times. I am not one to write reviews, but for those of us who were lucky enough to have never seen war, know conceptually that it's a terrible thing, and somehow idealize the heroism of it, this book will set you straight.I didn't know anything about this book until it was recommended in The Economist. I was curious because I read a lot of books on history and wars, and was baited by the idea of stories from women on the front lines - not at the factories working. It was purely out of intellectual interest - come to think of it, all the books I read on the topic were written by men....Once I started reading, I could not stop. Between tears and tissues, I kept reading. I read until I was sobbing so hard I couldn't see through my tears. The feelings of fear, pain, courage, grief, hope...of girls half my age...it was heart-wrenching. At their age I was having first world teenager problems of pimples and wanting to be popular. I could not be more embarrassed.These stories cannot be made up - not something this raw, this brutal, this...human.I write this review in the hopes to encourage more people to read it. There's no need to convince people that war is bad. This book will show you - straight to your heart.

There aren't enough stars for this book, the best war chronicle ever written.Theirs was the first generation lifted from serfdom, they became doctors, nurses, pilots, snipers, drivers, tank commanders, partisans and regular infantry. They were wounded, tortured, raped and killed. After indescribable horrors they returned to their villages and were often rejected as trench whores. The book is not nihilistic but very sobering: A species that produces such people has a fighting chance. It is essential for anyone wishing to understand Russia, Communism, or German fascism.One fragment: "As soon as I begin telling this story, I get sick again. I’m talking, my insides turn to jelly, everything is shaking. I see it all again, I picture it: how the dead lie—their mouths are open, they were shouting something and never finished shouting, their guts are ripped out. …And how frightening! How frightening is hand-to-hand combat, where men go at each other with bayonets…Bare bayonets. You start stammering, for several days you can’t get the words out correctly. You lose speech. Can those who weren’t there understand this? How do you tell about it? With what face? Well, answer me—with what face should I remember this? Others can somehow…They’re able to…But me—no. I weep. A truly great book. To say it is moving is a huge understatement. These women suffered as teenagers what most people can not even imagine. The war was a holocaust beyond imagination. They saw things happen that are burned into their memories. Each woman's statement complements and expounds on the others. It is not an easy read. But it gives you a unique perspective on war and why it must be prevented in all cases. These horrors do not justify the world that resulted as a result. So many lives were shattered and the political ramifications were not a solution either. Their stories should be recorded for history and taught to our children in every country. Alexievich deserves the Nobel Prize more than any other writer. It must be hell to catalogue these stories, and this was only her first book, which is expanded with material that was censored when the book was first released in the 1980's. She has gone on the write similar books on Chernobyl, the Afghan war, and the collapse of the Soviet Union. But this is her gem. You can not read it straight through. You have to read it in segments and then take some time to reflect on it. Utterly devastating!

I thought this was an outstanding albeit impressionistic contribution to Western understanding of the Soviet war effort in the Second World War. I'd consider this a must-read for anybody who wants to get a sense of the insanity of the Second World War and its human cost. It's all here: the patriotism and unbelievable courage of the average subject of the Soviet Union; the insane stupidity of Stalin and his regime's destruction of the Soviet army immediately before the war began; the brutality of the war itself and the errors of Soviet leadership that worsened it (sending unarmed Russians into battle against German Panzer divisions, Russian troops without boots in winter, starvation rations, etc.); the needless brutality of Nazi soldiers, the futility and stupidity of war in general. All of this told in a rather impressionistic style gleaned from interviews with female veterans, who tell their tragic tale sparingly and eloquently. The final lines of the book underscore the beauty of the author's narrative: "for a long time after the war I was afraid of the sky, oven of raising my head towards the sky. I was afraid of seeing plowed-up earth. But the rooks already walked calmly over it. The birds quickly forgot the war.."

They may have been few in number, but they offer sufficient proof that everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms--to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way."

I read this in college and ordered again to read some 40 years later. Frankl relates the severe conditions in the concentration camp. Those without any purpose seemed to perish. Those that had developed purpose and meaning to the harsh conditions got out of bed every morning to face another unbearable day. this book is a classic. anything less than 5 stars would be a reflection on me.

When I first started reading Man's Search.... last week I was repulsed by the descriptions of the concentration camp experiences. How could humans be like that? Even though of course we have known about them for 70 years now, it is horrible to read about them. My temptation was to put the book aside, I told someone it was "depressing." But how glad I am that I persevered (because it was our Book Club choice this month.) Ultimately, this book is a hopeful paen to humankind's ability to rise above all suffering, to find our own individual meaning to our existence and in that way make sense of why we are in the world and why we should continue in it, doing our very best. This book transcends religion even as I recognize so much of what Frankl writes in my own religious beliefs.Truly a must read for people as soon as they are old enough to understand it--perhaps mid teenage years.

Viktor Frankl, an Austrian Jew, studied neurology and psychiatry with a focus on depression and suicide years before being arrested and deported by the Nazis in 1942. He defied odds by lasting three years in concentration camps. He lost his parents, brother, and his wife, who was pregnant. As doctors were in short supply in the camps, Frankl, after working as a slave laborer for some time, was able to work as a physician until his liberation.As his work prior to his time in the concentration camps had focused on depression and the prevention of suicide, he turned his focus to his own survival story and the people with whom he interacted in the camps. Why did some survive and others perish? What gave people the will to live? What gives life meaning?Some favorite moments:•Life is not primarily a quest for pleasure, as Freud believed, or a quest for power, as Alfred Adler taught, but a quest for meaning.•Frankl saw three possible sources for meaning: in work (doing something significant), in love (caring for another person) and in courage during difficult times. Suffering in and of itself is meaningless; we give our suffering meaning by the way in which we respond to it.•Forces beyond your control can take away everything you possess except one thing, you freedom to choose how you will respond to the situation. You cannot control what happens to you in life, but you can always control what you will feel and do about what happens to you.•The truth- that love is the ultimate and the highest goal to which man can aspire. Then I grasped the meaning of the greatest secret that human poetry and human thought and believe have to impart: The salvation of man is through love and in love.•Love goes very far beyond the physical person of the beloved. It finds its deepest meaning in his spiritual being, his inner self. Whether or not he is actually present, whether or not he is still alive at all, ceases somehow to be of importance.•From all this we may learn that there are two races of men in this world, but only these two - the "race" of the decent man and the "race" of the indecent man. Both are found everywhere; they penetrate into all groups of society. No group consists entirely of decent or indecent people. In this sense, no group is of "pure race" - and therefore one occasionally found a decent fellow among the camp guards.•Now, being free, they thought they could use their freedom licentiously and ruthlessly. The only thing that had changed for them was the they were now the oppressors instead of the oppressed...Only slowly could these men be guided back to the commonplace truth that no one has the right to do wrong, not even if wrong has been done to them.•"Live as if you were living already for the second time and as if you had acted the first time as wrongly as you are about to act now."•So, let us be alert - alert in a twofold sense: Since Auschwitz we know what man is capable of. And since Hiroshima we know what is at stake.Highly recommend.

For some reason, I put off reading this book for many years. I had read excerpts that made me want to read it, but getting the book and sitting down to read it just seemed to not fit into my plans. I am so glad I finally read it. For about twenty years, I read many stories about World War Two. I wanted to know why no one helped the Jews. The most gratifying part of the reading was to find that there were many people that endangered their own lives and the lives of their families in order to hide Jews from the Germans. So, to follow a Jew into the concentration camps and read his observations was enlightening. Some survived the camps while others died. They all ate the same food, suffered the same diseases, performed the same work, and suffered the freezing temperatures. Why did some survive? I enjoyed Peter Allison's first book, Whatever you do, Don't Run and since we were embarking on a trip to southern Africa, it made sense to read his second. Although there were some funny and entertaining episodes in Don't Look Behind, there was a repetition when compared to the first book - not the same stories but similar enough to make the book not as interesting as the first. Both books are quick reads and although I'm not a fast reader, I found I was reading through the paragraphs quickly to get the main points of the episode but not either challenged or excited about the actual writing. If you like misadventures and look at what really happens at safari camps, you'll enjoy these books but if you're looking for good writing, they may not be the best way to spend your time.

This book is kind of like the out takes version of his first book Whatever You Do, Don't Run - but that in no way diminishes the pleasure of this read. Peter Allison is funny, likeable and almost wincingly down to earth. If it can be broken, he'll break it (jeeps especially) if it's further than a few clicks out from camp, he'll get lost, if it's big, exotic, has an attitude and the ability to eat you... he'll be the first one dragging you along to get an up close look at it. Who wouldn't want this guy as a friend or a guide? He's certainly fun, entertaining and educational to read. He loves the animals and his self-deprecation doesn't get in the way of you sensing that there's probably no one else you'd rather have showing you the beauty of Africa than this guy - whether you're in the back of his jeep or lying comfortably in your bed thousands of miles from that elephant that he's hiding behind the tree from. I love that he shares his fascinating life with the rest of us.

A book that deserves the acronym "LOL"Because you certainly will find yourself doing this several times as you read the adventures of Peter, the safari guide. It was so good that I quickly picked up his other paperbacks and found that the writing is fast paced, descriptive (a must when describing his encounters with the wildlife) and enjoyable. Just wish could see him churn out more of these books. And, after checking out other books by other authors who have similar experiences, he definitely sets the bar !

If you have read Peter's first book you will love this book too. He has done a great job in telling his history while living in Africa. Two stories are very heart wrenching. One is of a very unique cheetahs (not plural, sorry my Kindle won't give up on the "s") and the other is of some African buffalo. I was very hard pressed to put this book down even to go to sleep.

I love Peters writin, I laugh out out, and I'm happy at home while I vicariously extract myself from all those pickles he gets himself into...I'm an armchair Safari guide, with all the perks of being at home while he is in the Rome.....hey it's way better than not adventuring at all! I'm a real fan by now and look forward to. His next books as much for the. fun and frolic as for the humor.

This was an engaging read and perfect for bedtime as it was easy to put down at the end of a chapter(the book is a compilation of individual tales). The true stories themselves were amazing and held my attention but I have to say the writing wasn't brilliant. In particular, it was difficult to get a feel for the landscape and the characters - especially the author. I don't think you even find out what country he came from until halfway thru! It just lacked that visual picture a good author can give you on the first page. I did, however, enjoy the book and have ordered another book of his later escapades.

One of my favorite things is to sit around with fellow travelers, swapping stories over dinner or a camp fire - preferably both. Peter Allison's books are the next best thing. His casual style, passion for animals and willingness to laugh at himself are simply engaging. Of his three books, "Don't Look Behind You" is my favorite. Many of the chapters focus on animal encounters and, with minor censorship, I read several to my kids, who were getting quite curious about all my chuckling. Like swapping stories with a friend, his books are perfect with a glass of wine - or maybe a Tusker - at the end of the day.

The best of this genre about wildlife safari life in southern Africa. It consists of a series of short essays about Allison's experiences with animals and tourists. If you are planning on such a trip I highly recommend this book to prepare yourself for the experience. It is an entertaining read.

I loved Clan of the Cave Bear and was happy to see that it had many reviews and was rated four and a half stars overall. When I saw that 'Valley' got a measly three and a half stars, (!) I was compelled to write a review.Auel's wonderfully lucid descriptions and rhythmic prose are a sumptuous delight that continue in 'Valley of Horses'. The flora and fauna pop out of the book and I can almost smell the grassy herbaceousness of the meadows where Ayla lives and hunts. When I am reading valley of the horses, everything else seems to melt away and I become a part of the landscape, and a 'fly on the wall' in an ancient clan.Her musings on plant life and animal behavior will delight anyone who has read Thoreau or Emerson and you will recognize in her book some of the same childish wonder you often find in Thoreau's diaries or Emerson's poetry.The structure of the novel is well plotted and executed. The story flows at a pleasant pace and has a good amount of action and excitement. We are introduced to a few new characters and Ayla invents spectacular new instruments for hunting and survival. The heart of the book, in my opinion, is her relationships with the animals who are her neighbors in the valley. Even though the real climax of the book occurs when Ayla and Jondalur finally meet, the biggest part of the book deals with her isolation and her relationship with the horse who comes to mean everything to her.Highly, highly recommend.

I loved every moment. I had to take my time with this, because it was quite thought-provoking. Ms. Auel's series made you feel like you were there - with the characters. I was cheering them on through all of their adventures, and every time they ran into danger, I was holding my breath. I loved every one of the books, and she remained true to the story, all the way from the first page of the first book to the last page of the last book. I would read them again, and I am sure I will through the years. It is a set of books that I have every intention of keeping, just so I can have that opportunity, in fact. Well done, Jean Auel, well done.

This, and the previous book of the series, The Clan of the Cave Bear, are good stories and bring to life, in a plausible way, early periods of humanity that we can only speculate on from fossils and bones. It's enlightening to consider that "cavemen" may have had complex and nuanced social systems and ways of communicating. What I wanted to comment on, however, was the quality of the printing. I got the "mass market" paperback and there were dozens of pages where the print was so light (obviously a printing error) that it was difficult to read. For the third book (The Mammoth Hunters), I sprang for the regular paperback which, while a few dollars more expensive, provides an easier reading experience.

I've read the whole series before, and enjoy the first four books very much. (The final two books of the series were both a MAJOR disappointment!) The stories are good, moving along smoothly, and in places quite exciting and suspenseful. And the information about stone age living is voluminous, apparently almost entirely accurate, and fascinating. The writing is clear and smooth, and pretty good on the whole. Most of the characters are well-developed and believable, although the character of Jondalar (Ayla's love interest) has always irritated me -- the author tries to develop the character, but to my mind, she never quite succeeds, so he winds up seeming a bit shallow, and Ayla's strong love for him a bit of a mystery.

"The Valley of Horses" is book two, of a six book series written by Jean Auel. I loved every one of them, without exception, until the last one: "The Land of Painted Caves". Started reading this series in print, long before Kindle made it's appearance; the first books came out in a timely manner, but the last one took YEARS, and when it finally did come to be, I felt like the author had been pressured to finish, rather than leaving everyone hanging. That being said: if you enjoy some education with your reading, you'll love these. Mrs. Auel is obviously a very intelligent person who was diligent in her research, I just wish I hadn't been so disappointed in the last one.

Love the story line. I have read this series several times. I love the detail of flora and fauna as well as culture and climate. I don't agree with some of her ideas of how early people understood the world (like where babies come from) but if you tell yourself it's just a story you can go along with it. Now that I've read it several times I know I can now skip the light porn between the main characters without missing important story lines.

I enjoyed this book with reservation. It focuses on the transition that Ayla makes when she leaves the clan. There's a lot of fluff in the chapter, but perhaps it is because I prefer to get on with the story. Ayla becomes friends with a horse and we see it develop into a friendship and it's all good. Then there's the development of new characters who are introduced; however they really do not interact with Ayla until the closing of the chapter. There's a feeling throughout the book that the men will round a corner at any minute and meet up with Ayla, though it doesn't happen as quickly as you expect. By the end of the book, I understood more about the author's intent. You do get the feeling of much time that has passed since Ayla lived with the clan and she appears to be about sixteen years of age in this book. And of course, it is no surprise that a romantic relationship quickly emerges with one of the new characters and Ayla, which primes us for the next book.
