Con su tercera novela, titulada Basura (2000), obtuvo en España el I Premio Casa de América de Narrativa Innovadora. Ha publicado también un libro de poemas, Testamento involuntario (2011), y otro de narrativa, Traiciones de la memoria (2009). El autor tiene la capacidad de hacernos llorar en algunos pasajes y reir en otros. A pesar de que el tema del problema colombiano ha sido tocado miles de veces, en este libro es narrado desde un punto de vista distinto, el del colombiano comun, no el narcotraficante, no el asesino, no la prostituta. Incluso a veces se siente como leyendo una carta que el autor nos ha escrito. En cuanto lo termine volvi a empezar, lo recomiendo a cualquier persona.

Cross Infinite World never ceases to impress me with the titles they choose and this one is no exception. Sato's story takes place in a dangerous sci-fi world where crime runs rampant in the outskirts of town - called the Wilds - and the city is fighting against a powerful narcotic called Nightz.The romance was refreshing (but also dragged on and on). Euphemia doesn't sit around hoping one day Zel will notice her like most protagonists do (especially in YA). While she's naive and bubbly, there's a really interesting discussion on how women are perceived by others based on their appearance and demeanor. I also loved that she's working as a biologist and that the author had done her research to accurately describe her job and how important it was to this society.Likewise, Zelaide is dealing with society's prejudice against his race. Though fundamentally human, he's still "different" and this is causes a huge rift that separates him from Euphemia due to his lack of self-esteem. He's a crazy good fighter and a skilled hunter but he's not one for tact or interpersonal relationships. He often lashes out at everyone around him - including Euphemia. At first I was like, "not another abusive love-interest again" but that's not the case at all. He's not simply a frazzled tsundere trope either. He's very complex character who feels like he crawled out of an action movie but with actual depth to himself.The romance is mature and I really enjoyed it. I wasn't expecting the book to cover the themes it did and I'm wondering if this could best be labeled an adult novel rather than simply a light novel. The read was "light" but the subject matter and the prose and etc. were anything but.I can't wait to see where the sequel goes and I really hope to see more of Sato's works localized by Charis and her team at Cross Infinite World. However, highly sensitive topics and mature scenes are handled in this book. There is an attempted sexual assault in the first chapter (one that is thankfully put to a stop and then handled well afterwards) and the main villain (who we don't get to see) uses violence against women for their sick fantasies (but all of this is in the background and never detailed). We don't get to see too much regarding their goals or why they're doing what they're doing so hopefully we'll get the sequel soon to resolve this.This is primarily a romance with heavy violence and sexual content. It's crazy to think this originated as a web-novel and was then picked up by a professional company. This is the only light novel I've read so far that was very well-written and engaging and didn't read like someone's attempt at writing an anime-trope-filled fan-fiction.It has its flaws too however. It lingers too long on the romance (Euphemia leaping at Zel every chance she got) and the plot desperately needed to be reigned in a little more. The exposition not only dragged for a long while but it was then later repeated throughout the entirety of the novel as if the author couldn't expect the reader to remember the information. This happened often. Some of the translations had grammar and spelling mistakes but there weren't too many. Despite the thoroughly uncomfortable first chapter, everything came together and I'm glad I read it. It's perfect for escaping into another world but because of the above issues some people may find this takes away more than it should from the overall story. I guess this one would be a guilty pleasure book for sure.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! While it has your classic beautiful-but-airheaded heroine and tormented-handsome-warrior tropes, it stays true to the light novel feel of being extremely enjoyable but not too heavy.Unlike most light novels I have read, it goes into a bit more dirty details in regards to certain...activities. The beginning probably should have a trigger warning, and it does touch on some unpleasant heavy topics.Zel is an adorable male lead. He first appears OP, but has enough flaws (and shoddy self-confidence) to even him out.Euphemia is a decent heroine, portraying the naive, sheltered rich girl well.If you are a fan of light novels and shojo romance and possibly otome games, I highly recommend this book!

This was my first light novel, and I felt just as immersed into the beautifully dark world the author created as if I was reading a manga or watching an anime. I look forward to reading what's next for these two.

I purchased this book at a book signing by the editor. Southern Perspectives on the Queer Movement provides an excellent overview of the queer movement in South Carolina. Each chapter is written by an individual or couple directly involved with this historical process. As a founder of a local SC PFLAG chapter, I was familiar with some of the history but found so much to increase my understanding of the LGBT experience. It's a very readable, well-written, compelling book that I couldn't put down. While the book chronicles SC history, the personal stories will resonate with many and could have happened anywhere in the South. My copy is in circulation among friends here and each reader has appreciated this book and exclaimed over its personal impact. Yesterday, I heard a quote from one of the chapters which will prompt me to read the book again. I heartily recommend this book to LGBT people, parents, friends and allies, therapists, social workers, and to anyone who would like to expand their knowledge of LGBT people and their work towards inclusiveness, protections, and equality.

I am never disappointed by a book written by Victor Methos, and A Gamblerâ€™s Jury is no exception. Dani Rollins is an interesting and flawed character who the reader can root for because her driving force is to get justice for her mentally-challenged client, Teddy Thorne. What seems to be initially a simple case turns into a nightmare for Dani, and she must use her cunning to navigate the system that has been rigged against her client. The situation posed in the novel will strike anger and frustration in the reader at a system manipulated by those in power that are charged with dispensing justice fairly and blindly. A satisfying ending will leave the reader satiated and eager for the next Methos legal adventure.

If this had not just been nominated for an Edgar and I had not read 3 other excellent books by this author I would have thrown in the towel by page 11. EVERYONE in the book is a loser, a loser with a soul maybe, but still a loser. The protagonist is a female defense attorney who in the opening scene shows up in court wearing jeans and nursing a hangover and the next day breakfasts on beer....The book is just as well-written as Methos' other books, and the plot was developing interestingly, but the towel got thrown at page 68. At that point a friend asks Danielle to go on a blind date with a friend of a friend. When she meets the date she realizes he is a guy from the popular set in her high school class who had invited her to a dance. After she had excitedly told all her friends, he took her aside and told her he would only take her if she performed oral sex on him in the school bathroom." That was enough, and I felt dirty just for reading it. I would normally not review a book when I did not finish it, but I think a number of readers would find it offensive enough that I want to warn them.It seems that one of the several trends today is to see who can create the most dysfunctional, unappealing characters and cultures. If that is the standard today, maybe this book does deserve an Edgar.

I choose to rate this legal thriller(novel) as one of the best because it contains one of the best themes that is build on a very strong and reliable character that has an excellent sense of morals followed by a great sense of reasoning!!!!!! I would recommend this book to anyone regardless of political altitude!!!!!!!!!

When I started this book I was surprised how much I disliked the main character but as I read I fell in love with who she was and what she was doing. Once I got into enjoying her I couldnâ€™t stop reading this book.Me. Method your writing and characters never cease to amaze me. I now wait with based breath to see what comes from your amazingly creative mind.

He cannot be a purveyor of drugs and pull off a deal.The police arrest him in the act. How could this be? It had to be one of the other boys with him. Moreover, why does the District Attorney want and is trying her client as an adult when he is seventeen?All the right questions to get answers to in this character-driven novel. Dani is a smart defense lawyer who pushes the envelope when it comes to judges and the prosecution.They cannot see what she can. This kid does not have the where all to have committed this crime. In court, she will prove it. However, can she?All leads point to her client except the one no other person is seeing including Dani's private detective, who cares for her. Dani's family life is in the background of the quick read.A Gambler's Jury is laid out in a way the reader may pick up the clues Dani, and her detective missed up until the jury is in, which leads to an exciting ending. A good lead-in novel to a series.

the book really kept my interest. I found it hard to put down. as a criminal trial lawyer with vast experience ( over 50years)-- the main character (Ms Rollins) got away with putting down a particular judge that would never have happened in a new york or a vermont courtroom. the characterization of the defendant, a mentally disabled charged with sale of cocaine, hit me hard and i found myself really caring about what would happen to him if ms rollins lost his trial.Well, she did lose-- and eventually--the defendant's father, in complicity with the defendant's mother, ended up committing the very crime with which the disabled son, was charged.that's ok--- but i didn't feel there were enough ' clues' which the reader could figure out- leading to the parents.I felt- that the ending 'came out of nowhere' and was 'sprung' upon the reader to induce a happy ending.But. as I said the book was very compelling and , my familiarity with a courtroom, particularly a criminal court made it enjoyable for me-- but I was not pleased with the ending and how it came up ' all of a sudden."

John Grisham meets Janet Evanovich! It is a fantastic story of the Injustice of the criminal justice system. There are the details we expect of Grisham. But the lawyer if off the rails like Stephanie Plum and landed in the right side of things. The twists were great! Loved the book.

Outstanding!!!! Mr Methos uses knowledge of the law and a lot to humor to write some of the best books!!! I have read everything this very talented author has written. Please keep them coming!!!!!!!!

As a high school tennis coach, I use the book often. Some of the drills are difficult to pull off with the level of players on our team, but most are quite useful.

This book came in handy for coaching my tennis team. I was able to update information on tennis and come up with some great drills for practice.

The book is pretty dry. There is no order in the way the drills are explained, for instance what the purpose of the drill is.

Overall, this is a very good collection of tennis drills. Tina Hoskins covers tennis drills for numerous situations including: singles, doubles, group and children drills, competitive games, and even backboard drills. That is how she reaches the staggering number of 245 tennis drills. Given that most players have specific needs and desire associated with tennis drills, you will probably find only a small percentage of these drills useful. And, that is perfectly OK.In my case, I am a former varsity college tennis player still hitting at the NTRP 4.5 level with a technical orientation to the game. I actually love challenging singles drills. Within this book, I actually found only 8 drills (3% of total drills) useful. But, these 8 drills include some of the most physically and technically challenging drills I ever came across. The most extreme drill is the one actually portrayed on the cover page. Frankly, if it was not for this book, I did not think this drill was possible. This is because it is composed of shots that are typically outright winners (passing shots down the line, and cross court volleys in the open court). In any case, I tried these 8 drills this past weekend. And, they worked. After an hour and half of intermittently doing these drills, and then just hitting around to catch our breath; We did all these drills, had a lot of fun, were more exhausted than usual, but hit the best we ever hit. I can see how if I keep the work up on these extreme-8s, my game and physical condition will reach the next level.If you are a tennis coach teaching clinics, there are probably many more drills you will find useful within this book. But even if you are not, you may find the book very useful just like I did. The drills shown in the book, opens your mind and body to what is possible. Out of the drills shown, it is easy to tweak them a bit to your own needs. Thus, tennis drills becomes also a mental game of creativity.The one drawback of the book is that a slight majority of the drills are explained without drawing. I think the book would have been more effective by concentrating on maybe the best 100 drills and illustrate all of them instead of 245 drills where only a minority of the drills is illustrated. But, overall this is still a valuable book on tennis drills.

This is not a good book. First too many words without illustrative pictures. When I looked at some pictures, I found the setup for different stances illustrated by the author herself is so funny (it is not correct at all, especially her left hand motion). After that, I do not even want to continue to read this book. I do not recommend this book.

Lovely elegant recipes with intelligent background from historian Lucy Worsley. The photos are mouth-watering and far less high-calorie than actually making any of the dishes. The only caveat I have is that the recipes are designed for an English audience, so they'll require a fair amount of translation for American cooks -- ingredients are given in grams rather than cups or teaspoons, oven settings are in centigrade, and some of the ingredients are not really obtainable in the U.S. (Is golden caster sugar the same as brown sugar? Not sure.)

I read Mr. Coxâ€™ earlier book on the Java Sea campaign and was looking forward to his next publication, unfortunately he has experienced the sophomore slump with this effort. While, he presents some interesting and new information and his style makes for an easy read, I could only give the effort a 3 star score due to flaws in execution.I have three major problems with the book:1. The editing and proof-reading for this book is extremely poor. As others have mentioned, there is no reason to get Butch Oâ€™Hareâ€™s service wrong and other similar errors. I feel that Osprey Publishing has let the author down by not editing and proofing this book more closely. Osprey has plenty of experience with military topics and should have staff knowledgeable to catch these errors.2. The paucity of maps and the lack of a map index. You donâ€™t come across a map showing the AOR until page 249. Unless you have a separate atlas or are very knowledgeable of the area, it makes it very difficult to follow the various events. There are no detailed maps of the Rabaul-Guadalcanal region, which is a shame. There are also no maps of Guadalcanal or the land actions that the author devotes a number of chapters. There are a couple of very nice maps for the Battles of Savo Island and Cape Esperance, so there is the capability to provide this type of info. Again, I lay a lot of the blame on Osprey for this failure. Osprey has always been known for its top-notch graphics and maps in its Campaign/New Vanguard publications. If they want to be taken as a serious publisher of larger works, they need to show the same level of expertise on the larger works.3. Lastly, I enjoyed Mr. Coxâ€™s overall writing style, as someone has stated it is engaging and entertaining. He does a good job of maintaining suspense throughout the book. What I have problems with is his continuing habit of making snide comments about individuals that he dislikes, such as Captain Bode, USN, and Lieutenant Colonel Tsuji, IJA. I understand that these individuals were flawed and had negative impacts for their respective services and the author is in his rights to bring these flaws out. However, to continue to make snide comments throughout the narrative is just not very professional in my opinion.I definitely came away with a better understanding the challenges faced by both opponents. The trade-offs facing the USN and its decision to continually operate in the Torpedo Junction area; and the balancing equation faced by the Japanese at the far end of their logistics chain on whether to provide supplies or additional troops to the battlefield.A final comment regarding various reviewer comments that the author only gave us half a loaf. When I ordered the book, I took note of the subtitle and understood that it would only cover a portion of the Guadalcanal campaign. I understand my fellow reviewerâ€™s frustration if they pre-ordered and got less than promised. I do find it strange that Mr. Cox did not include an Introduction stating his goals for the book and laying out his hopes/plans for a follow-on effort.This is his second publication, so hopefully this effort is just the typical sophomore slump and that Mr. Cox will complete the narrative of the Guadalcanal campaign and rectify some of the shortfalls mentioned in this and other reviews.

In August, 1942, the United States launched their first amphibious offensive of the Pacific War. The target was Guadalcanal, located in the Solomon islands. The Japanese were busy building an airfield there, and if finished, the vital supply lines to Australia would be threatened. In "Morning Star, Midnight Sun", author Jeffrey Cox looks at the first few months of the campaign.Over the course of August through October, 1942, the American navy and Japanese navy clashed in no fewer than four major engagements, including the battles of Savo island, where the Allies lost four heavy cruisers, the Battle of the Eastern Solomons, the Battle of Cape Esperance, and the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands. Heavy losses were suffered on both sides. The Japanese lost most of their veteran pilots during this time, while the Americans lost the aircraft carriers Wasp and Hornet, leaving the Enterprise as the only American carrier operating in the Pacific.Cox also spends time discussing the battle on Guadalcanal itself, including the struggle of the American First Marine Division to hold on to Henderson field in the face of non-stop Japanese attacks. The Americans endured constant combat, as well as shelling by the Japanese navy. But the airfield, along with the planes of the Cactus air force, fought bravely to keep the Japanese from taking the airfield."Morning Star, Midnight Sun" is a fine book about the first half of the battle for Guadalcanal. Each major engagement is discussed in detail. Cox also describes the horrible conditions that the men faced on a daily basis, including torrential rains, exhaustion, and disease. This is a very good book, and I'm expecting there to be a second volume that deals with the remainder of the campaign. Highly recommended.

Finally a book that goes over (in detail) the naval battles around Guadalcanal that is easy to follow and well written. Most histories tell us â€œand then the Hornet was sunkâ€ without the story of the bravery of her crew trying to save her. Well done.

Finding my grandfather's unit mentioned may have colored my opinion but I found the book well written, easy to read and chock full of information I had not previously known.

A well written account of the early Solomon islands campaign. I have read many of the other accounts of this campaign and this is clearly one of the best!

A very compelling narrative of naval action during the early Solomon's campaign. Both sides of the battle were covered fairly details that are often overlooked. The details did not get in the way of the narrative. It moved very fast and turned a military history into a real page turner. The only criticism is that it left me with wanting more. I hope Jeffrey Cox will continue the narrative with the rest of the story.

So far, the book really goes into the thinking and planning by both the Americans and Japanese. I found it most interesting so far as to how "screwed" up it was between MacArthur and the Navy as to who was to do what and how the eventual invasion of Guadalcanal came about, etc.

Morning Star, Midnight Sun, should be read by all students of the Pacific War, for it tells a tale of heroism, sacrifice, and the unbelievable bloodshed that occurred, not just with the land battles on the island of Guadalcanal, but in the waters around it. Exhaustively researched, Cox brings the reality of war home to us on every page, painting a word-picture of the struggle that you won't soon forget.
