Review

"Whatever her interests or circumstances, every woman in this fantastic and diverse collection is empowered by her steamy adventures." Publishers Weekly "The entries range from tenderly seductive--Alyssa Cole's sf human/android tale "Essential Qualities" proves a true standout in this regard--to playfully raunchy, with everything in between. This anthology's inclusion of diverse characters in terms of age, race, kinks, and ability is refreshing and much-needed in erotica; each writer finds a way to adhere to the collection's theme while blissfully breaking the mold. VERDICT An exceptional volume of quality quickies; highly recommended." Library Journal"The latest of this anthology series includes stories of hetero, gay, and multiple-partner sex in all sorts of exciting scenarios, under the vague theme of "outsiders" and "risk." This means everything from a Fifty Shades-ish BDSM story to the above skydiving short to a wild Halloween orgy on a yacht -- no skipping ahead required." Cosmopolitan"If you're not sure where to start, try Best Women's Erotica of the Year, Volume 4...the anthology's overarching theme of "outsiders and risk" manifests in plenty of incredibly sexy ways." SELF"The overall quality of the volume is quite high, the sense of eroticism beautifully enacted. Best Women's Erotica of the Year is just that, and will please many a reader on the long, cold winter nights ahead." From the Inside Flap

Introduction: The Sexual Allure of Outsiders Who Take Risks The first three volumes of Best Women's Erotica of the Year didn't have official themes, but when I was compiling Volume 4, I decided I wanted stories on the themes of Outsiders and Risk. While on the surface those may seem incongruous, both spoke to me regarding current events and seemed urgently relevant. At a time when outsiders of many kinds are being ostracized, discriminated against, and shunned, I wanted to explore what being an outsider feels like on a deeply personal level. I always want the authors I publish to turn readers on, but this time, I also want to make you think. The outsiders you'll read about here sometimes grapple with navigating a new culture, as in "Aftershock," by Jo Henny Wolf, or the constraints of their own culture, such as the tender, heartbreaking longing in "Seven Sweets and Seven Sours," by Megan Hart. In Eliza David's "Protest of Passion," a community organizer finds herself swept away by a different kind of passion than the one motivating her lover. I left it to my authors to define what exactly an outsider means to them and their characters. All of us have likely been outsiders at one time or another, depending on the circumstances. Outsiders may be able to learn something about themselves via insiders, and in the process enjoy some hot sex, as happens in "The Pick-Me-Up," by Suleikha Snyder. Sometimes it's hard to say who the outsider is, such as in Alyssa Cole's sexy science fiction tale, "Essential Qualities." The bisexual protagonist of Calliope Bloom's "O Captain! My Captain!" ventures into unknown territory with her new lovers, going from outsider to insider as she takes a risk that pays off. Taking risks in the face of fear has certainly cropped up in past volumes, but the risks the characters take in these stories are heightened. Sometimes these risks are erotic in nature, like trying something new for the first time, for instance posing for an erotic calendar, as the heroine of "Take the Shot," by Mica Kennedy, does, or starring in a gang bang, like Julie in "Beautiful Dirty Wonderful," by R. M. Wood. Sometimes the risk itself is a turn-on, such as the illicit but utterly arousing behavior of the naughty narrator in "The Dressing Room," by Alessandra Torre. Sometimes these risks, while sexual in nature, involve confronting aspects of these characters' core selves that require a great amount of bravery. In "Her Invisible Prison," by Jocelyn Dex, Eden faces a battle between her desire and her agoraphobia. Her steps out of that "prison" are hard fought and all the more exciting. And lest you think a story involving mental health can't be scorching hot, Dex will surely prove you wrong. Similarly, in "Baby Doll," by Sienna Saint-Cyr, Heather pursues her fetish only with the very careful reassurance of her lover. Many of these stories involve finding community of one sort or another, whether that's the world of rodeo bull riders in "Eight Seconds," by Madeline Moore, or kink club BDSM as in "Belonging," by Tamsen Parker. While passion and desire are at the heart of these tales, there's more happening than simple arousal. There's a little something for everyone, I'd like to think, within these pages, from the woman going back to school who gets an education beyond the books in "With Honors," by Sofia Quintero, to a divorced woman getting seduced by a learned man in "Words with Benefits," by Tamara Lush. You'll travel back in time with "The Invitation," by Regina Kammer, get kinky with "Mark" by Rosie Beth Randall, explore a penchant for tickling in "Breathe," by Patricia Elzie, and attend an orgy in "On Display," by Louise Lagris. You can find out more about the series at bweoftheyear.com and follow our books and authors @BWEoftheyear on Twitter and bestwomenserotica on Instagram. You can always reach me at bweoftheyear@gmail.com to share what you want to see more of in future volumes. I hope, at least in some small way, this book entertains you and gives you inspiration to take the kinds of risks these characters do. Rachel Kramer BusselAtlantic City, New Jersey

I hadn't paid attention to the theme of Best Women's Erotica, until I'd read a few stories and decided to look and see what it was—getting off in a dressing room, being the subject of voyeurism in a car—it's all about the edge that comes when you just might get caught doing something filthy. If Bravo's "Below Deck" was more like Calliope Bloom's "O Captain! My Captain," I might be more inclined to watch it, and the male protagonist of Rosie Beth Randall's "Mark" could teach Christian Grey a thing or two. But the thing I loved most about these stories is that the sheroes weren't all perfect femmebots. There are scars, booty, an extra few pounds sometimes, and not everyone's 20 with storebought boobs. If you're tired of badly written porn masquerading as erotica, this is the perfect book for you. And it's available as an ebook, for easy commuting reading if you feel like taking your own little risk. . . .

Rachel Kramer Bussel has done it again. In her newest book, Best Women’s Erotica of the Year, Volume 4, she introduces the theme of outsiders and risk, and this collection of diverse erotic stories hits the mark. This themed lens provides us with a unique backdrop and introduces us to ‘every woman.’ Yes, these are the women not marketed by Hollywood or a PR firm. What I like best about this volume is how each story introduces us to characters who push us, the readers, to consider how individual and complex our experience of sex is. Here are several of the stories that impacted me.Alessandra Torre allows us to experience the hotness of other people having sex in the dressing room next door. She spurs us on to enjoy the invitation it evokes. A public/private space ignites imagination and lust in “The Dressing Room.”“Aftershock” by Jo Henny Wolfe addresses the power and depth of sexual connection in the face of a natural catastrophe. Alone, the main character struggles with a language barrier. The volatile situation allows her to draw on the strength of past coupling to make this enormous risk workable.Tamara Lush moves us down the road of life development to the mid-life stage in “Words with Benefits.” She introduces hook-ups within the mode of what mid-lifers do for fun but adds the sexy twist. A real component of this story is having “miles on the tires.” Life experience allows a deep connection and one that combines the personal hobbies with hidden and untouched desires.“Protest of Passion” by Eliza David drops us in the life of two women positioned on opposite sides of an issue and tackling their life passions in different ways. Add attraction to the mix of risky elements in their job and neighborhood and watch lusty sex ignite.Calliope Bloom uses the backdrop of Halloween costumes and parties to stage outsiders involved in risk. She sets a situation that ups the ante on her main character and moves the story along by providing surprises and choices. “O Captain! My Captain!” hits all the right tones and places. These stories celebrate strength. Characters are in the middle of risking themselves for what they want, sharing vulnerability yet working through it and moving forward. Sex allows us the opportunity to grow, and these stories represent examples of how that can happen.Once a sex-educator, always the sex-educator. I recommend this book as part of your bibliotherapy. Readers, you owe it to yourself to see what sex-positive writing can do for your entertainment and enjoyment. Whether in learning mode, fantasy mode or if you need a little psychological edge to get you where you want to go, this book can provide it. Sex is an integral part of life, and these stories represent that with their beauty, simplicity or complexity in relationships highlighting the settings and situations. And last, the exciting part, you are reading high quality literary erotic fiction. Kudos to Rachel Kramer Bussel for another stellar publication.

Sometimes I enjoy erotica simply for the sake that it's so foreign from my own life, that it offers a complete escape. And you'll definitely find stories in here with such unique scenarios, they would be difficult/impossible to replicate. (You'll also find a diverse set of characters that come alive in a matter of pages. I saw myself in some of them, and enjoyed the experiences of others like I would as if they were a good friend telling me about the incredible night they had over coffee the next morning.)But the erotica I enjoy most are well-written stories that give me new naughty ideas I can try out for myself. As a queer/pansexual switchy individual, let's just say I got a lot out of this book. I was especially relieved to find powerful dominant femmes in more than one story. The theme of the collection is Outsiders and Risk and each writer takes the theme in a new direction. For me, one of the pleasures of reading the book is waiting for the "risk" to reveal itself. The risks are often a major part of the erotic build-up, kicking these stories into sensual overdrive. In many of the stories, the concept of outsiders manifests through a narrator with a marginalized component in their identity, such as race or disability. The editor always does a good job of creating a refreshingly inclusive anthology, which makes me even more inclined to support the series.

Unfortunately I had reason to purchase this book. I had first read After the Affair by Janice Spring. I found this book , Getting Past , was much more practical and down to earth. It had many very helpful concrete suggestions for the different stages and it addresses more than just the hurt and pain that the "betrayed" person feels. There have been some reviews complaining that this book goes too easy on the person who had the affair and that is let's him/her "off too easy". I really do not feel this book does that at all. What it does is asks both partners to look at their parts in what went wrong with the relationship that contributed towards the affair.BELIEVE ME, I see no justification for one person to step outside of a committed relationship and seek emotional or sexual connections with an outside person AND, I also believe that regardless of my contributions that led to unhappiness and misunderstandings in our relationship that I did NOT cause the affair to happen and it is NOT my fault it did. It was my partner who chose to seek an outside person due to his unhappiness rather than share that unhappiness with me.But the value of this book is very important in that it is helping me see more clearly past my pain and to is helping me see more clearly what I do want to happen down the road with us .AND the more important part is that although my partner is a wonderful person in that he is WILLING to read any book I push at him, and he did read most of After the Affair and a few others, this book has been so much more helpful to him and some of that is due to the way the authors speak in a less BLAMING tone towards the person who had the affair.Believe me, they do not let ANYONE off the hook but this book does use language that is less one sided and blaming and does try to get BOTH sides to look more closely at what the long term goal is and how not only to get there but the things to do that would prevent a couple from getting there and creating a new relationship.I am sure I am not as clear as I would like to be in my review but these past 3 months have not been a period of time of mental clarity for me. :-/ I do hope that if one is trying to recover from the pain of an affair or a series of affairs, that one tries out this book.My only regret is I did not purchase this one first !! I think it would have helped me see a few things more clearly and my partner would have felt more invested in reading .Good luck !!!

This was recommended by our counselor. It would've been better if this book were not so broad based. It's intended for therapeutic use, but because it attempts to be all inclusive, it over reaches and isn't as good as it could be. It's like prescribing a appendectomy for everyone who has a stomachache. The person who cheats is motivated differently based on gender and the person who was cheated on reacts differently based on their gender. This book tries to treat all four persons with one volume.

I'm still reading this. It is an excellent book regardless of what side of the affair you are on. Makes you stop and take a good hard look at many things.

Very thorough and well thought out book. Really touches on the reality of all of the intricacies that go into an affair. I would recommend this book to anyone going through this situation, whether you are still trying to work on the relationship together, apart or even if you are an individual trying to heal from it on your own. I believe that you will find this book a useful tool.

ok info..

Luckily, we stayed together. We both read this helpful guide and discussed what we read. I believe both parties, if sincerely interested in healing together and rebuilding their relationship, should read this book.

Very balanced information to help a spouse determine whether to leave or stay. I felt it gave excellent examples how couples worked through their situation. The ultimate decision of whether to leave or stay is determined by the reader.

Well written and helps while going through a bad situation.
