The book is very good for getting children to understand the plight of some during the holocaust. The description said this book is a first edition, and I find no confirmation of this in or on the book. But it is still a great book to own if you want to begin to explain the holocaust to a young person. The illustrations are quite nice, too
Such a well done Holocaust story -- moving and true. Beautiful, lyrical picture book.
Jane Yolanda is the master of finding the right words to make stories authentic, beautiful and revealing. The illustrations are fantastic.
Perfect for a child: direct about the war experience but not too scary. And with the lovely tale-telling that Yolen has fine-tuned. Plus the illustrations are charming.
Beautiful portrayal of a life disrupted by the Holocaust but ultimately reclaimed.
Simple transaction, book as described, used for daughter's book report at school.
This is a beautiful book, in both words and pictures. It's difficult to write about the Holocaust in a way that young children can understand. This book gives the right amount of information. We sense the danger that our young narrator and her family are in, but the love of her family always surrounds her. The story begins with a Jewish girl and her brother enjoying happy days in Paris, running to the bakery in the mornings and going to school, and then we see them fleeing with their family to the woods to escape the Nazi soldiers, traveling to England, and finally returning to Paris when the war is over. The thread of a stone angel, and of angels watching over the family, runs through the book and provides additional comfort to the little girl. But there is no mistaken the dread and danger brought on by the Nazis. One moment in particular stands out to me: when the little girl offers the boat captain her teddy bear in exchange for safe passage and he responds with kindness. The author's note is very informative. Adults and children will both learn about the Nazi occupation of France through this book. I know it's early in 2015 but I think this is going to be one of the most acclaimed children's books of the year.
I found this book on the discard shelf at the library for $.10. I homeschool and grabbed it wondering if it would compliment our history studies. My children 5, 7, and 8 were very engaged and asked a lot of questions. I highly recommend this book.
