I learned of Lucian Boia watching a Utube video, in which a Romanian history lecturer mentioned his name. He was right there at Amazon, and I got his book right away to my IPad. I did read it in a day! His book is a revelation for me, and an outstanding example of courage and moral integrity! I was born and grew up in Romania, and personally witnessed its history from the early 50's to January 1989. The book is the first of its kind, in combining ancient, medieval and more recent history with the description of the places and the people from the point of wiew of an objective observer and scientist, who remains a loving and proud representative of his nation. During my years spent in Romania I have witnessed the past changing way faster than the future many times! It is of outmost courage, even in today's Romania, to leave aside the myths and politically oriented lies, and I suspect the author is not popular with many contemporary Romanian groups. He certainly earned my respect and sympathy! The only way to overcome hardships of the past - and present - is telling the truth! And that is often unsafe, even for allegorical works, and so much so for a historical work! I highly recommend the book to anyone interested in the past, present and future of this amazing "Borderland of Europe"!

Boia is controversial within Romania, for his criticism of Romanian "nationalism," but that criticism could be applied to any country. For English-language readers, this is a wonderful introduction to Romanian political culture. It is especially interesting on the political implications of language and history.

After so many years Lucian Boia's Romania (Reaktion Books - Topographics)is still a book I want to refer to when I need informed and relatively objective info on my own country's history.As a Romanian I find Boia's book a great read. His critical approach to history is much appreciated, even if it's sometimes difficult to agree with some of his interpretations. But that's the fun we love - to be challenged.I strongly recommend it to all those interesetd in Romania as well as to Romanians themeselves.

Great introduction into Romanian history as well as the background information surrounding the various cultural oddities of this very interesting country. Would recommend it to anybody who has an interest in the country and/or culture of the Romanian people.

The best book I've read on the subject.

After living for two months in the Romanian region of Oltenia, I came home obsessed with the place. I wanted to know everything I could about its history, culture, language, and people. This book was on my wish list for quite a while before I went ahead and bought it myself. Smartest thing I've done all year. It is a highly informative read about the history of the land, all the way from Rome's Trajan to the present day, and the aftermath of Romania's extremely destructive bout of communism. Boia writes candidly about the spotty past of the country, even to the extent of sometimes portraying Romanians unfavorably. A lot of emphasis is put on the relatively recent history of post-WW2 events, and goes into depth about Ceausescu and his appalling legacy. The only thing about the book that I was slightly disappointed in was the focus of attention on Bucharest. It was not an area of the country I spent much time in, and I wish Boia would have spread out and explained more about Oltenia and the Banat; but it was still very intriguing. I would enthusiastically recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in the country.

I thought the book was especially useful because Lucian Boia tells us right off the bat that there is not one, but many histories, of Romania. This is one of those histories, fortunately it's one that is well-researched. Some histories have been doctored to present a particular ideology while others try to be more objective. I suppose it's up to the reader to ultimately choose which history they want to believe. But at least this author was willing to admit that he didn't know everything, but was still willing to present the story of Romania's past to the best of his ability. I found that a refreshing change from those historians who pretend to have the ultimate answers.

For someone who plans on visiting Romania or is simply fascinated by this country's unique and complex position in Southeastern Europe, for those interested in its culture, history and people (and the events and phenomena that have helped to define this history) or for those, like myself, who are attempting to piece together the puzzle of their national identity by going back to their origins.... this is a wonderful point of departure. Boia's narrative is very powerful, as he takes the breathless reader on an unforgettable journey through the various (both necessary and unfortunate) stages in the protagonist's development, in order that the reader may try to understand the complex, and often conflicting, make-up of this fascinating land (and, in the process, as was the case with me, gain a better understanding of oneself).Unlike traditional historians, Boia doesn't just list facts; he analyzes Romania's condition throughout the ages and the events, ideologies and people that have made it what it is today, and at the same time, urges the reader to analyze them and to draw his or her own conclusions.(I simply could not put down this book until I finished it.)

The subject matter is not cohesively developed. The basic physical acoustic relationship are simply stated without any introductory background. Each section of each chapter are full long winded equations without any intuitive physical explanation. Even the mathematical concept are simply named and not introduced and explained properly. I bought this book with the hope it will show how to develop application of Fourier Transforms to Acoustic problems methodically and logically, but I was disappointed to only see a series formulas only. This is not an even an advanced book.

I am very pleased with this book. A must have for physical acousticians. The book has clear explanations of all the concepts and great pictures.. Love it.

The condition was very good, It was exactly what I expected.

The part of this book that I've read, chapter 2, I found neither fundamental nor concise. The author immediately gives the acoustic wave equation and Euler's equation in Eqs. (2.1) and (2.2), respectively, followed by a derivation of the latter. Other books more instructively derive Euler's equation first and then give the constitutive relation (-dp/dt = k*div(v), were p is the pressure, k the fluid compressibility, v the velocity field, and div() the divergence operator), whence the wave equation can be simply derived.Further on, in Section (2.5), in the expression for the time-averaged acoustic intensity, the author does not state the assumption that Eq. (2.16) holds for harmonic fields (cf. Jacobsen, [...]), instead hand waving that "the one-half results results from the time average process". Further, the symbols p(omega) and v(omega) in this equation actually represent the complex amplitudes of the harmonic pressure and velocity fields, and not their Fourier transforms as the notation suggests.In short, parts of chapter 2 are imprecise to the verge of being erroneous.

This is a "must have" book for everyone who deals with acoustic radiation. The treatment of nearfield acoustic holography was scattered all over the scientific literature about acoustics. Now one has a reference point, where all the main aspects of the subject are dealt with in a clear, didactic way. The chapters are very well organized, containing an introduction on the basic aspects of signal processing and leading naturally to a good understanding of the subject.

An enlightening historical view of the issues between Islam and Jews and between Christians, Jews and Islam. A must read for everyone no matter what your religion is. Only through undwest and ingredients can we begin to open a dialogue between religions and cultures.

So much information about how we, the world's major religions, got to where we are today. None of us need to feel too superior about it either. Another book that is hard to put down.

Excellent book whether you have read his first book or not. Explains in pretty good detail a lot of stuff about Christians, Muslims, and Jews and is good information to have to help a person make decisions about the world around them and kind of understand just why things are as they are.

A must read, in conjunction with "When Religion Becomes Evil". Especially timely given world events. Helps to understand history. Helps to understand the dangers that can stem from zealots everywhere.

This is an important book for the current time, in which fundamental religious beliefs are being used as an excuse for violence. I bought this book for my church's library, and I think that it could fit well into libraries of other religious bodies.

A very good book which opens eyes about the dangers of extremism in religion and how this impacts politics. It is also a good reminder of events of the recent past and how they affected the course of history.

The respectful and honest correspondence between an orthodox soldier in tzahal and a secular girl on a kibbutz is very moving and also educational on many levels. Both are extremely likable and intelligent. Subjects like evolution, zionism, relationships between the genders are discussed as well as their own feelings. In my opinion, the book is a classic. I didn't want it to end .....

What a beautiful and captivating read! Bought this book originally on Misgav Am, a kibbutz (farm) in Northern Israel where you can see Lebanon, Syria, Israel, and [on a clear day] the Mediterranean Sea at the same time! Finished it in 4 days while on the trip, and mum read it as soon as I came back home, and inspired me to buy an extra copy so that I could give mine to my grandma as a present and lend out the extra to friends interested back in college in the fall! So many fascinating issues presented about secular vs. religious Jews in Israel, and Zionism, and Judaism's practices. This book was originally released in 2012 in Hebrew in Israel and it is now being released here in the US. This is a small book and doesn’t take long to read. The first half of the 190 pages is made up of letters from Talia (a real person but a fictional name) to Dov and his responses to her. Dov is a religious young man in the Israeli Army. Talia is a young lady living at a secular kibbutz and studying for her matriculation. Dov and Talia corresponded for two years after her father met Dov on reserve duty and recommended she contact him. Dov attended a hesder yeshiva which combines Israel’s requirement to serve in the military with time to study Torah.Talia is very secular but has a strong desire to learn more about her religion and Zionism. In their letters, Dov and Talia are brutally honest with each other. His adherence to religious law often offends Talia. But Dov has that perfect mix of being incredibly intelligent and, I have to say, charismatic. While he is adamant regarding his position, he is also able to sway Talia in some of her beliefs. It is often in Talia’s pushing back at Dov after an offense that his best explanations are then offered. She wanted to learn, and he was happy to teach.The two did meet face-to-face a couple of times. And there was definitely a tenderness developing between them. Some have called it love. I see it more as adulation on her side and fondness (like to a little sister) on his side. Unfortunately Dov is killed in the Yom Kippur War. The book stops abruptly there. This is probably why I am giving it only three stars. I feel that there should have been something more from Talia. Perhaps how she learned of his death, her reaction, what she went on to do. After this abrupt ending halfway through the book there is then a short section that is basically a biography of Dov’s life. Then it wraps up with his friends telling us what Dov was like.It was interesting to read his explanation for why very religious Jews do certain things, why they believe a certain way. He was an exceptional young man. He had a wide interest in all types of topics. He did not limit himself to just religious texts. He loved learning just for the sake of learning. Dov embraced the beauty of his religion and never apologized for it. He loved nature and relished each gift from God, great or small. Several times he is quoted as seeing something and then exclaiming “How great are the wonders of God!”

Dov’s premature death robbed the Jewish People of a great man who bestrode the religious and secular worlds and could have led a much-needed synthesis of the two. The correspondence between him and Talia is a must read.

An Incredible Story . Very Inspiring . Fantastic Zionestic book. This book made me want to be in Israel and experiance the Miracle . Dov was a special person . What a shame he passed away so young . What a loss to the state of Israel.

Superb book with eternal truths.

Fantastic discussion between 2 young people from 2 different, but both Jewish worlds.
