About the Author

Eric Carle is an internationally bestselling and award-winning author and illustrator of more than seventy books for very young children, including The Tiny Seed, Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me, and his most well-known title, The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Born in Syracuse, New York, Eric Carle moved to Germany with his parents when he was six years old. Great book! My daughter loves it!However, I was disappointed by the packaging- a large cushioned yellow envelope. The package should have had a sturdy cardboard piece inside to prevent the mailman from folding the package- but it did not. So my book came folded and torn at the spine!

The award for the new book by Texans Sherrie S. McLeRoy and Roy E. Renfro was presented Friday (February 11) in Obrero, Sweden. Both authors were on hand to accept the award. Earlier, Grape Man of Texas had been named "Best Wine Book in the English Language" by Gourmand International in Madrid, Spain. Grape Man of Texas chronicles the life and work of internationally known Texas horticulturist Thomas Volney Munson. Working from his North Texas base, Munson not only developed more than 300 new grape varieties suited for production in the Southern United States, but also gained worldwide acclaim for his winning fight against the deadly phyloxera epidemic of the late 19th century which almost wiped out the world’s grape production. A magic experience for me to read this work. Munson lived in myarea of Texas, I know both authors and the history of wine is ofinterest to me . . BRAVO! Munson is a US legend and I was gladto find it from Amazon so I could fill in the blanks of my knowledge.

As other reviewers have pointed out, this is a solid, scholarly work that presents Munson's life and work in a way that is clearly intended to hold the attention of non-academic readers and on that basis I recommend it. Furthermore, to their credit, the authors do not ignore, as all or most other Munson biographers have done, the subject's unconventional views regarding religion. That being said, they could have done more with it. As someone with a more-than-passing interest in the subject, I can say that there is far more unsaid here than said and it appears to me, from the way they handled this particular topic, the authors were not entirely comfortable with it, which is too bad, because Munson's so-called "infidelity" was a part of his life that was clearly important to him.

This is an excellent story meticulously unfolded by the authors about a Texan who was obsessed with grapes. His scientific exploits are nicely chronicled in a very well illustrated book. Most books with this level of information in them are dry as dust to read, but these authors have made the life of Munson fascinating. Highly recommended!
