About the Author

Maria Luisa Dalla Chiara, professor emeritus of Logic and Philosophy of Science at the University Florence is a past president of the "International Quantum Structures Association", of the "Italian Society of Logic and Philosophy of Science" and a  past vice-president of the "Division of Logic, Methodology and Philosophy of Science". She is the author of  books and articles concerning the following fields: quantum logic, quantum computation, foundations and philosophy of quantum theory, semantics of physical theories, theories of meaning, semantics of music.Roberto Giuntini, professor of Logic and Philosophy of Science at the University of Cagliari, is president of the "Italian Society of Logic and Philosophy of Science" and past president of the "International Quantum Structures Association". His research centers around the logico-algebraic structures of quantum theory and quantum computation. In 1998 he was awarded the Birkhoff-von Neumann Prize. Roberto Leporini received an MSc degree cum laude in Computer Science in 1999 and a PhD in Computer Science in 2004,  both from the University of Milan. Since 2005 he is an assistant professor at the University of Bergamo. His main research interests are: quantum computing, quantum optics, quantum computational structures and logic. He has published over 40 papers in international journals and holds a patent on the construction of quantum circuits. He is the president of the "International Quantum Structures Association".Giuseppe Sergioli received an MSc degree in Theoretical Physics at the University of Catania and a PhD in Logic and Philosophy of Science at the University of Cagliari, where he is now an assistant professor. Best Book Out There!I've been having insomnia issues for a couple of years.It got so bad that I couldn't fall asleep AT ALL.When Ambien stopped working I knew I had to make some changes in my life.You've probably read most 'Sleep' books about sleep hygiene etc...If those suggestions (don't drink caffeine late at night or watch TV in your bed etc..) don't work, you need to buy this book. Period. Full Stop!The author is a sleep ninja and though her suggestions are not the easiest to follow but holy sh*t, do they work!My advice: Buy this book and follow it to the letter.I've went from not sleeping to sleeping decently after only a couple of days which for someone who is severely sleep deprived it is absolutely amazing.I tried meds, therapy, mediation, soothing voices, guided meditation..nothing seemed to work until I read this book.If you've tried everything else, this book will resonate with you because she describes why other methods fail.(Why you are lying in your bed not able to fall asleep even though you've followed perfectly all the other advice.)After trying so many other sleep suggestions and methodologies and failing time after time, this book is a life-saver.

After suffering from increasing insomnia of 2.5, 3, or 4 hours sleep nightly, in desperation I purchased and downloaded this book on my Kindle yesterday afternoon. I did a speed-read through half of it concentrating on the parts that described me. I immediately started trying the strategies suggested. Last night, for the first time in years, my mind wasn't racing when my head hit the pillow. I was actually drowsy. I fell asleep in about 20 minutes - a record for me since I usually toss and turn for up to 2 hours and then wake up several hours later unable to go back to sleep. After incorporating some of the suggested strategies, not only did I fall asleep in about 20 minutes, I actually slept the complete night through!!!!If that isn't sufficient endorsement to buy this book, I don't know what is. I live in a rural part of the U.S. so I'm grateful for this kind of expertise through a book. I look forward to reading the entire book this weekend, making some permanent lifestyle changes, and finally not dreading nighttimes anymore when "trying to get some sleep" was becoming increasingly challenging to me.Although this book is directed toward adults, there are very helpful suggestions throughout it that would also make it a valuable tool for parents whose children don't easily fall asleep. Some things for parents to consider include what activities take place in the bedroom verses other parts of the house, dimming the lights awhile before bedtime, and, obviously, certain foods and substances that interfere with our sleep cycles.-----P.S. It is now almost a month later since I wrote my initial review of this book. I am now sleeping 7 to 8 hours most nights although sometimes it drops to 5 or 6 hours per night. I have learned important principles: (1) To "reprogram" myself to be prepared for sleep when my head sinks into my pillow and if not, to get back up; (2) What strategies help my mind to shut off and prepare for sleep; (3) What activities I was previously doing that were counterproductive - causing my mind to stay in high gear even when I was very exhausted; (4) To no longer worry if I have a night or two of less sleep since I now feel in control of my sleep habits.The very best thing about this book is that no medicines (often with serious side effects) are recommended to help a person sleep.

This book is very good and helpful to me. I have been using it for about three weeks now, and plan to be using it until I get back to sleeping somewhat normally. It gives step by step instructions for helping a person decide which exercises might help on an individual basis. It also has good questionnaires to help you diagnose your problems that may be causing your insomnia. I have been suffering extreme rebound sleeplessness after major changes to my RX's, some of which I have been taking 28 years. I am using it in conjunction with professional counseling. My counselor was impressed with the book and is thinking of ordering one for her office.

This book was recommended to me by my psychiatrist to help wean me off Xanax, which I have been prescribed for insomnia for 15 years. I'm not quite sure why my doctors have not ever questioned how long I have been using the drug, they just continue to refill the prescription. I forgot the Xanax on a trip once, and not only could I not sleep, I started going through what I guess are "withdrawal" symptoms: very agitated and nervous. It was hell. This book is easy to read and has shed a lot of light on insomnia. I highly recommend reading this book if you are taking any kind of medication, over the counter or not, to help you fall asleep.

Though I read and enjoyed Chernow’s biographies of Washington, Hamilton and Grant, I found this biography of Rockefeller his best. I did not expect that. The bland grayish cover, which shows a grim, almost sadistic-looking Rockefeller against a sterile cityscape, does not inspire a potential reader to think of “enjoyable read.” Likewise, the pre-book knowledge I had of Rockefeller’s founding of Standard Oil led me to think that this biography would involve a lot of dry reading about Rockefeller’s financial dealings. But I was completely wrong. This is a gripping story, much of it about an America we now live in but know little about the origins.Chernow is, as usual, an excellent stylist. The book can roughly be divided into two parts: 1) how Rockefeller got the largest fortune in American history at the time and 2) how Rockefeller gave most of that away in philanthropic work. He drove thousands of small businesses out of the market and put multiple thousands of workers out of work using ruthless and cutthroat techniques, many (not all) of which were legal at the time. Cooperation with him was always better than competition and woe to anyone who did not agree. His personality is fascinating and Chernow does an exceptionally good job at bringing that out. In fact, Rockefeller’s personality and character are central themes that run throughout the book – how this pious Baptist who thought God wanted him to make as much money as possible so he could give it away could go through life with massive repression and apparent equanimity. His (and his son’s) philanthropy is incredible, from founding the University of Chicago to Rockefeller University to the Rockefeller Foundation. Millions for this, multiple millions for that in late 19th century and early 20th century money! It is mind-blowing. The book begins with Rockefeller’s father, a patent medicine quack showman who kept two separate families and ends with Rockefeller giving more money to advance real medicine than any individual in history.The book expands the reader’s consciousness and is a fascinating and enjoyable read at the same time. Though Chernow’s Hamilton gets all the press these days, I learned more from this book about America and enjoyed it more. In my view it is a pinnacle of biographical writing - by any author.

This is the third book by Ron Chernow that I have read. Last year I read his biography of George Washington followed by his excellent work on Alexander Hamilton. His latest books led me to one of his earliest biographies. What they all have in common is a personal picture of Americans who have had a fundamental impact on this nation for good or ill. I wasn't sure how I would feel about a book that dealt with the life of John D. Rockefeller. I have to admit, as I began this book, that I had preconceived attitudes about men like Rockefeller especially in the context of the 2008 recession. Mr. Chernow points out so well that there is both a good and bad John D. Rockefeller who had so much to do with the creation of an Industrial American Economy in the Post Civil War Era. There is the greed of the monopolist who attempted to eliminate competition without regard to the untold harm it could cause to our economic prosperity. Then you see a man who was undoubtedly the wealthiest man in America committed to giving away the wealth he had accumulated to improve the society that had allowed such disparity in wealth. Yes, John D. Rockefeller brought philanthropy into our economic vernacular . There is a dichotomy here that is very difficult to judge. If we advocate a laissez-faire free market economy, such disparity seems to me is inevitable. In this book I saw both good and evil in this man. Mr. Chernow helps you to consider what kind of cooperation is necessary in a free democracy.

Let me begin with the fact that Chernow's composition and writing style are outstanding. The man has great talent and an obvious intellect.The book begins with a bang and builds to a crescendo- at first. The development of Rockefeller's origins, early life and ascendancy to the worlds richest man, and the captain of American Industry is breathtaking. The detail about his massive and discrete giving are awe inspiring. I couldn't put the book down and burned through the first 300 pages in a few days. Then it happened: Chernow's hatred of Rockefeller's Evangelical Christian world view became too much for him to bear and the book sags into leftist drivel and sanctimony by page +/- 325. It just gets worse from there. It becomes pretentious, and snippy- slouching toward all out hatred for Rockefeller's success springing from the Christian doctrines of self denial, industry, thrift and generosity.While Chernow treats Rockefeller's Bible Based World View with fairness and thoroughness in the beginning, and attributes Rockefeller's genuineness and success to Rockefeller's Christian convictions, the envy and contempt of the author bleeds through and stains the rest of the book.The reader is treated to constant haranguing and insults directed toward Christianity generally, and Rockefeller's practition thereof specifically.Rockefeller's life was nothing short of overwhelming. His candor, authenticity, tireless commitment to Abolition, Education, and Temperance all bubble from the wellspring of his Christian convictions. His detractors such as Ida Tarbell and other angry socialists do as much to burnish Rockefeller's reputation as his own good works.I was taught as a youth to "hate" the "Robber Barrons" (another totally fake Identifier of the original American builder/makers) and dismiss Rockefeller as an evil greedy man. I was lied to! I have a new and great admiration for this authentic and invaluable American hero- thanks to Chernow's book, and my trained critical thinker's discipline to consider the motive of all editorials.

It’s no secret that I’m a huge Lauren Blakely fan. One of her books and my favorite reading chair is my happy place. Her writing brings me so much pleasure, and it’s because her stories are so much more than simple romantic comedies or contemporary romances. Lushly told love stories centered around couples that the reader can’t help but root for, dripping with romance and pulse-pounding passion and swirling with interest in the form of original plots, wonderful side characters and fun, quirky details.The Feel Good Factor is Blakely’s sexiest romance, and that’s really saying something considering it was a bit of a slow burn—but, believe me when I tell you, it was burning the whole way through. Derek McBride was a hero I fell for immediately. Like Perri, this character flipped all my switches. The instant chemistry between the two of them was electric, and I settled in with what I knew was going to be one heck of a hot ride. Inked, dirty-talking, bike riding, paramedic Derek was a bad boy with a heart of gold, and I absolutely loved this knee-weakening, utterly swoon-worthy hero. Perri Keating was exactly the kind of heroine I adore. Strong, independent, confident with a caring, kind core, Perri had a weakness for tattooed, alpha bad boys. She was a whip-smart, sharp-as-a-tack police officer who was ambitious and dedicated to her job and her community.“…we’re choosing this tonight—we’re choosing the feel-good factor and all its risks.”I was on a plane when I read this line, and I audibly gasped in relief—I just barely stopped myself from fist pumping. But even the law abiding cop is going to have a hard time keeping her hands to herself with the sexual tension blazing between them.So make new rules, right? But there are also some other dynamics brewing. I am looking forward to getting more with Shaw.

She can’t afford to lose the income from the rental, and he needs a place to live. But they’re adults, so what’s the worst that can happen?These two have fiery chemistry from the beginning. Neither is looking for anything but fun, and are very clear on boundaries. But, as Perri’s friends can see, things between them quickly take a shift neither had counted on, but was probably bound to happen -- they are a perfect fit of the other’s type.Once again, Lauren’s writing has me swooning, enjoying, and fanning myself throughout. This couple struck me more than the other 2 set in this wine country town for some reason. I think because they are both so focused on what they need that they forget to look for ways that others can help them. I love the backdrop of Lucky Falls, and the small town festivals that build the community. The way the upcoming kissing contest plays into Perri and Derek’s time spent together only furthered the steam factor. Because one that Feel Good Factor has been played, it is difficult to pull it back.

Ellmann's account of Wilde's extravagantly operatic life as poet, playwright, aesthete, and martyr to sexual morality is notable not only for the full portrait it gives of Wilde, but also for Ellmann's assessment of his subject's literary greatness; both aims are served by a plethora of quotations from Wilde's own work and correspondence. Wilde straddled the line between the Victorian age and the modern world as he did everything in life ... with impeccable style.

This book will tear your heart. The infamy of his prosecution, and persecution, is beyond words. He never savaged his detractors as they did him, primarily the execrable egotist, the tiny little man named Whistler but also Swinburne, so cowardly yet such an unforgettable poet. But at least Swinburne had an excuse since he was psychologically damaged.How many benefitted from his help or encouragement in his glory days, yet figuratively spat at him when a maniac (the Marquess of Queensberry) pursued him to his destruction.His magnificent Biblical drama Salome and the poems inspired by his prison stay will not be forgotten. Nor will Dorian Grey, the ultimate in the tracing of a descent into unspeakable depths.And somewhere down there in those depths can be discerned the ridiculous yet hideous spirit of Alfred Douglas, a man whose existence was totally pointless.Among the numberless acquaintances of this tragic figure I must pay tribute to Nellie Melba, rarely described as warm-hearted, but it was she who emptied her purse for him on a Paris street when, threadbare and penniless, he was forced to ask for money.That powerfully descriptive phrase "emptied her purse" is straight from the book, just one of many memorable phrases that make the history live for the reader.I believe there never was and never will be a superior biography of Oscar Wilde.

A real door-stop at 600 pages of 7-point type, but you'll want to read every word of it. It's a triumph of loving research. I would describe Ellmann's prose as more workmanlike than entertaining, but that's perfectly OK, because Oscar's life was so amazing that any biographer's vanity would only get in the way. If you have any humanity at all, you'll finish this book having fallen in love with Oscar and identifying with him. You will hate his persecutors, tormenters, and deserters, and especially you will loathe the rot and ugliness of class. You will finally feel drained, crushed, and utterly devastated. But you will come away wiser and strangely more sympathetic and loving toward all humans, as Oscar was, not because they are lovable, but because you happen to be one.

Enjoyed this bio. Have always wanted to read about him in more detail. This certainly goes into detail about every aspect of his life. It was well written and kept my interest. Oxford at that time was certainly different! Lots of quotes and poems and interesting facts about artists and academics. The writing was so small I almost needed stronger glasses - this is my only criticism but I should have checked first!

God save Ellman. He knows more than anyone about Irish writers, and I love his writing style. I also recommend, so strongly, his bio of Joyce.

I thought I was literate right up until the first page of Richard Ellman’s book Oscar Wilde. His writing does a far greater service to Wilde’s life than it probably deserves.

This is an amazing and exhaustive work about Oscar Wilde's life and is highly recommended by one Wilde's biggest fans, Mr. Stephen Fry. The book does not disappoint.

This book was a nice addition to any Oscar Wilde collection, I gifted it to a friend after reading and it was awesome! Loved the footnotes and attention to detail.

Books are like very personal items; either you're interested in the subject matter or you're not but somebody else is. Open the cover and take your chances.
